Is it a must-play? It was for me, but maybe not for you. If you enjoy environmental puzzles and stories that can jump way over the top, you could love this indie gem. In essence, you play as a young boy moving from left to right. Along the way you will face lethal humans, dogs and merpeople intent on stymying your progress. If you survive and solve all the environmental puzzles, you are treated to one of the most bizarre endings in video games. In addition to your odyssey there are secrets scattered across the boards and a hidden ending to unlock. A typical player can beat it in three to five hours. Looking at my save file I spent six hours with the game, primarily trying to finish the story with minimal backtracking for secrets. Your journey is frequently held up by environmental puzzles. These can range from flipping switches to mind-controlling clones to manipulate the environment. Puzzles vary in difficulty, but I managed to beat the game without looking up any solutions. The game also uses a generous checkpoint system, so even if you are facing an extremely lethal puzzle you never lose too much progress. That said, I still found one puzzle with a merperson vexing.
Looking at the bigger picture, the Huddle mind-control theory makes a lot of sense, but there's another prominent theory as to the true meaning of Inside 's ending, specifically in relation to the game's secret ending.
Inside 's ending is one of the most confounding conclusions to a game in recent memory, which can make the story feel unsatisfying or even incomplete - but with a little bit of additional insight, perplexed onlookers can find meaning in the final sequence. Getting to the end of Playdead's puzzle platformer is challenging in and of itself; after all, it'll require problem-solving with little to no help, aside from the occasional guidance of a spotlight. Despite all the trouble they've gone through, the end result is nothing but oddity and vagueness. Fortunately, a deeper meaning can be found upon closer analysis of Inside 's ending and story. Toward the end of Inside , the unnamed protagonist will find themselves absorbed into a creature known as the Huddle, which is the disturbing result of scientific experimentation and seemingly composed of human limbs. Now playing as the collective Huddle, they'll be tasked with escaping the containment facility. Only adding to the confusion is that once the Huddle manages to break free, Inside simply ends.

Inside will see the player-character take control of a number of zombified, brain dead humans, with him able to move them along a level using mind control. However, the secret ending for the game drops a strong, almost bulletproof hint that he is a mindless zombie, too. The secret ending can be revealed by first finding all of the hidden orbs scattered throughout the game, with you then able to return to the cornfield segment near the beginning of your journey, clambering into a hidden vault tucked away beneath the ground. After entering a musical code, you then venture through a tunnel that eventually leads to a room with a mind control helmet and a switch. Unlike the other helmets in the game this one is connected to the floor, with it shutting down when the boy flicks the switch, simultaneously causing the boy to become motionless and thus ending the game. So what does this mean? When you turn off the switch, you are effectively cutting off the mind control connection between you and the player-character, therefore ending the game. We played it and compared it side-by-side with the Xbox One version and noticed no discernible differences in draw distance, image quality, framerate, or even the initial loading time.
