Located on the northern half of a multi-cultural but divided island, Cyprus, and in a wider region, Middle East, that has been prone to conflict, with peace taking a very long time coming, reflection on Peace and Conflict is an ongoing concern for its inhabitants. It was not surprising, therefore, that Peace and Conflict were pressing concerns for us, the conference organizing committee, in deciding this year s conference theme. With the recent Peace Journalism Conference and institutional initiatives along those lines at our Faculty, it seems that we have also become a contributor to a what is fast becoming a Faculty tradition. However, we were also concerned about how Peace and Conflict were commonly understood as polar opposites. In a polarized opposition there is no place for conflict in peace, and peace, the privileged term of the binary opposition, needs to be pure and homogeneous, cleansed of any unlicensed differences and contradictions. Yet, a radically plural and democratic politics must harbor conflicting and antagonistic views of things; opposition is internal to it; and its view of freedom says that freedom is always the freedom of those who think differently. By contrast, the ideal of a homogeneous, selfsame, indivisibly unified society, as we keep hearing about these days, is totalitarian and repressive of the very differences that make a society, any society, possible.
