Anxieties, worries, mundane to-dos, even positive things, sometimes feel like they're swirling around in a chaotic funnel cloud and I would like nothing more than to sit in physical and mental silence. One answer is to decide that nothing matters anyway and give up caring. But that means deciding that my wife doesn't matter. And that my kids don't matter. And that art, and nature, and things that bring joy to my life, don't matter. Another way is to decide that some things, ok maybe most things, don't matter, but that there are things that do, and those are the things that make it all worth it. I get to decide what those things are. The first approach is nihilistic. The second approach is empowering. This film explores both approaches, and I was a sobbing mess at the end. I will say there were times that I was a bit exhausted by this movie.

Few things in life are certain besides death, taxes, and maybe the never-ending task that is doing laundry. That is, until they take an emotional, philosophical, and deeply weird trip through the looking glass into the multiverse and discover metaphysical wisdom along the way. In this love letter to genre cinema, Michelle Yeoh gives a virtuoso performance as Evelyn Wang, a weary owner of a laundromat under IRS audit. We see their smiling faces reflected in a mirror on their living room wall. Soon, Evelyn is thrust into a universe-hopping adventure that has her questioning everything she thought she knew about her life, her failures, and her love for her family. Production designer Jason Kisvarday crafts a seemingly endless cubicle-filled office where everything from the blade of a paper trimmer to a butt plug shaped auditor of the year awards become fair game in a battle to save the universe. Match cuts seamlessly connect the universes together, while playful cuts help emphasize the humor at the heart of the film. Yeoh is the anchor of the film, given a role that showcases her wide range of talents, from her fine martial art skills to her superb comic timing to her ability to excavate endless depths of rich human emotion often just from a glance or a reaction.

Lost Ollie Not only that but it absolutely lives up to all the hype it got in a way I couldn't possibly imagine and is all pinned down by likeable characters and fantastic performances this Yeoh and Quan renaissance we're basking in is lovely but how exactly them pesky Daniels can follow on from this is anybody's guess. I sort of get the idea of multiple universes, where different versions of ourselves play out different destinies independent of what's actually happening to us in the here and now.
