And, as these unseen images show, they revelled in their hard-man reputations right from the start. Whether it was lounging around in their trunks at the local lido in London's East End or being suited and booted inside the West End's fancy clubs, it seems Reggie and Ronnie liked to show off their famous swagger at every turn. These photographs, which feature in a new book on the brothers, were gathered from the private collections of friends of the Krays. Co-author Neil Jackson said: "The book sheds a new and more personal light on the infamous Kray family without attempting to glamorise their crimes. It shows a more human and relaxed, less staged image. The one exception is the earliest image in the collection which shows the twins as Second World War evacuees in leafy Suffolk. In it they can be seen playing with their dog Freda and other kids. Mr Jackson added: "I love this picture of them with the dog when they were evacuated. This was before any of their criminal tendencies came out and the innocence of two young boys playing around in the country with their dog is very powerful - considering what they became. Later images show them with members of the notorious "firm" in their first business venture the Regal, which they turned from a grotty snooker hall into a glamorous nightspot. As well as their well-known family, scores of Kray associates also appear in the album.

Two of the faces are very familiar — and they usually bear scowls rather than smiles. They belong to none other than two of Britain's most feared gangsters: Ronnie and Reggie Kray. Since their heyday in the Fifties and Sixties, 'the twins', as they were known, have become synonymous with a sleazy sort of spurious glamour. They have become almost iconic figures who transcended the worlds of entertainment, politics and vicious criminality in which they moved.

In the excellent 4 shot, the man left middle isn't Dickie Morgan but is Brian Dovey an old friend soon to be killed in a motorbike crash. The man on the right isn't O'Leary but is Tony Lambrianou.
