Watson was the senior community developer at Volition who was leading the Saints Row 2 patch project at the studio. Watson announced in May he was stepping down from his role as Volition's community manager as he battled stage four cancer. Afterward, he said in a Steam post that he would continue to work on the Saints Row 2 patch. In the post, Watson wrote that both stepping down from the role and continuing to work on Saints Row 2 were his decisions and that both Volition and publisher Deep Silver had been supportive of him. His hard work and dedication caught the eye of Volition and he joined the studio in an official capacity.

Gentlemen of the Row is a massive overhaul mod for the infamously bad PC port of Saints Row 2 made by a rather devoted fan named Mike Watson AKA IdolNinja in an attempt to improve the base game to a more playable state and help it reach a wider audience by adding in tons of awesome new fun and wacky content created by the man himself. Though Mike tragically passed away after a long battle with terminal cancer in late August his legacy continues to live on through his Gentleman of the Row mod and the impact it has left on the Saints Row community. Fans to this day are still booting up Saints Row 2 on the PC well over a decade after its initial release, despite its poor unmodded optimization, thanks to him and all the amazing support and creativity he brought to the game. In fact, when it was announced in that Saints Row 2 would be getting an update patch to fix the PC port after its source code was rediscovered, IdolNinja was placed at the head of the project, with much hype given to the fact that the update would also incorporate many of the improvements Gentlemen of the Row made. Of course, reading about it is one thing

Being developed during a time when Grand Theft Auto clones were popular , Volition's Saints Row series stayed true and unique to its name by giving players a great degree of creativity with more open-world sandbox options and features which felt more distinctive compared to other titles in the genre. He'd known for some time that it was a battle he was ultimately going to lose, so many of us did as well. His passion for the series earned him a community manager position at Saints Row studio Volition, and saw him take the lead on an official patch for Saints Row 2, using the source code—thought lost until it was rediscovered in —to restore it even more completely than his mod was able to. Rest in peace, my friend.
