Hooda math timed test
I was so fast!
Fractions are tricky. I finally get it! I finally understand the terms, understand the idea of a reciprocal, and can remember all the rules! Sometimes they seem almost too easy because I finally get it! It is such an amazing feeling after years of dreading fractions and if I am completely honest, dreading them as I entered this class.

Dividing fractions is tricky but once the process is understood, it is really fun! Solving for equations and all that comes with it, for example later learning about linear equations and connecting algebra with graphing, can seem daunting for elementary age students. The second is a basketball version. I have a tendency to memorize answers before memorizing methods. Boaler also make two points I especially love: 1. I have always felt that one of my greatest learning strengths is my memory. The impact that a teacher can have is scary. The link is a wealth of these types of puzzles and is a great resource for all you teachers out there looking to introduce these concepts! As much as I enjoyed my times tables, I can still remember the anxiety especially when I felt like the minute was slipping away! Boaler also make two points I especially love: 1. It is equally powerful in influencing students to make learning more difficult or discouraging and this is all too often the case. Flip the second fraction to create a reciprocal and then multiply the numbers on the top numerators and the numbers on the bottom denominator. The video above does an amazing job of explaining the method but I have more resources for you!

It is such an amazing feeling after years of dreading fractions and if I am completely honest, dreading them as I entered this class. But my understanding as multiplied pun intended and I am loving it. Timed math drills make students anxious, decrease performance, limit understanding, and can turn students away from math. The argument states that in order to understand the process of multiplication and division, we need to have times tables memorized first. I had a teacher that was a full year sub, filling in from an administrative role, and coming in with no experience and no motivation. I will be posting a few blogs about math concepts that I am particularly interested in with videos and links that can help along the learning process. Just something to think about. The last link is a video with models for dividing fractions-very helpful for visual learners. This game can be used by students to practice this concept of solving for x and become more comfortable with variables. Teaching is one of the greatest responsibilities and it must be carefully considered as such. The argument against times tables : The argument against times tables is not really against them at all, it is against memorizing without understanding. Sign me up. Subscribe Subscribed.
