The shock looked different from the one on my old XRR. Mine had the remote nitrogen reservoir and this XL didn't appear to have one. In affluent America, the heartland of disposable income and the home of the term "Mad Money," every motorcyclist should have a Honda XLR nestled in his garage. Maybe every rider doesn't really need an XL, but everybody can have fun on one. The XL makes an ideal second or third motorcycle for those with a little extra cash to burn. Or if funds are tight, the XL is a practical, one-and-only bike. Over the years, dual-purpose bikes have developed a reputation for mediocrity; indeed, early dual-purpose machines tended to emphasize economy over performance. However, that has changed in recent years as both Yamaha and Honda have put more front-line technology in their dual-purpose bikes. With its Pro-Link rear suspension and long-travel front fork, the XLR has benefited from this trend. We tested the XLR, and the '84 model is virtually unchanged. All of the dirt-riding amenities are included in the , such as long-travel suspension and a narrow four-stroke single-cylinder engine. I sold it to buy a Harley another great bike but I have huge regrets about selling that Honda.
I decided to compile a list of common modifications for the XR in hopes of eliminating some of the common questions asked on this forum. These modifications are intended to improve the overall performance of the bike, without sacrificing reliability. Feel free to suggest amendments or things to edit. The XR is an excellent offroad machine; however, it was for the most part obsolete about 20 years ago. The bike can still be accredited to having probably the best reliability of any full size bike out there. When properly setup and modified, the "little XR" can run with the modern big bikes, especially in the tight and nasty technical terrain. It just takes a little prying and it's out. Rejet one size up on the main and pilot. When these things are done, the bike will breath much better.
