David Hafler February 7, — Hafler audio 25, was an American audio engineer. He was best known for his work on an improved version of the Williamson amplifier using the ultra-linear circuit of Alan Blumlein, hafler audio. InHafler founded Acrosound with his colleague Herbert Keroes. This company was primarily in the business of designing and manufacturing transformers for tube amplifiers.
Author: Karsten Hein. Tag s : Power Amplifiers. There was a time when my good friend Luigi was bringing HiFi gear by our house for testing on a regular basis. And although there were lots of interesting discoveries to be made, somehow the devices did not strike a chord with us to the extent that we actually wanted to own them. One day, as I was climbing up the staircase from an evening teaching classes, I could hear music playing in the living room that sounded very realistic, even from a distance. Whatever this is, I was thinking to myself taking the last few steps, this is going stay. The system Luigi had set up for us was a Hafler combo consisting of the DH preamplifier and the 60 watts DH power amplifier.

The Hafler circuit is a passive electronics circuit with the aim of getting derived surround sound or ambiophony from regular stereo recordings without using costly electronics. Such circuits are generally known as matrix decoders. The Dynaquad system works using similar principles. Named after its early proponent audio engineer David Hafler , the circuit exploits the high amount of stereo separation between Left and Right channels and sound phase. The rear channels will playback out of phase sounds, while the forward channels are unaffected. Using the circuit typically reduces stereo separation by only about 2 dB and the rear speakers are only required to reproduce a limited frequency range allowing them to be smaller and cheaper. The rear sound level in a live performance recorded in stereo is reproduced about 7 dB below the front level, but clearly audible. The rear ambient sounds, applause, and coughs from the audience are sometimes received out of phase by the stereo microphones, while sounds from the musicians mostly are in synchronous phase. Thus, if rear speakers are fed with the difference between the stereo channels, audience noises and reverberation from the auditorium may be heard from behind the listener. This can be most easily achieved by wiring two similar additional rear speakers in series between the live feeds positive terminals from the stereo amplifier. Alternatively, one rear speaker can be used on its own. This is the type of quad setup used by Seeburg jukeboxes that had quadraphonic sound.

TA THX, rare more expensive Are there any underrated gems or sleepers in this list? How do these compare to the cheaper Adcoms, e. Or the older Brystons 2B, 4B? The ones made in China. Nothing against China, but these are their low cost crappy models.
Amazingly, its clear, three-dimensional sound is comparable to many amplifiers made today. McIntosh MC While the MC put the signature big blue meters in the market, many people consider this the greatest amplifier ever made. Released in as the MI for commercial applications, it eclipsed any amplifier of the day with an extraordinary watts per channel. The consumer version, MC established McIntosh as the premier audio company of the day. Phase Linear It was and Bob Carver saw the future and brought to market a product that would set the stage for a new audio segment—affordable, mass-market, high-performance audio. Rock bands put dry ice on stacks of these legendary watt per channel amps to cool them down. The Series One is the one to have. Krell KSA Arguably, the first high-end solid-state super-amp. The year was and who would know that the KSA , right out-of-the-box, would establish Krell as one of the greatest brands of all time.

As every audiophile knows, David Hafler is a hi-fi legend. In he founded Dynaco and soon became a household name. The Dynaco ST, one of the best-selling amplifiers of all time it sold more than , units in its lifespan —and considered one of the greatest classic amps—needs no introduction. Ditto the beloved Dyna-Kits, affordable ready-to-assemble kits for building preamplifiers and power amps that also proved very popular, even ubiquitous, during the s and 60s.

Or the older Brystons 2B, 4B? Categories : Surround sound Quadraphonic sound. The Hafler DH is well worth exploring. The XL We used wideband video transistors for their minimal loading of the input stage. They were designed by Acoustat's honcho. Some time ago we had borrowed it from Luigi to test it on our smaller system. The preamps were Denons. Hafler made several different models of amplifiers and preamps over the years. We have given short shrift to these amps so let us begin to remedy that. They also need only a minimum of compensation. Spatial representation is highly accurate and piano notes are flung deep into the room. Download as PDF Printable version. Scroll below for PA-7 details.

ISSN Thanks guys, for all the advice. Because the Gately name was already associated with broadcast consoles that broke out into random oscillation? All the others gave me the impression that they were sweetening the bottom end a bit, which may be incorrect because of using different speakers like I said. The system Luigi had set up for us was a Hafler combo consisting of the DH preamplifier and the 60 watts DH power amplifier. Quadraphonic sound. Following the Dynaco business model, these products were available in both kit form and factory assembled. These kits includes additional installation parts including hookup wire, solder, capacitors, etc. Ed Gately owned the company.
