Andor shed new light on the Empire's inner workings, giving insight into the infighting, mistrust and personality clashes within the organization. This focus on the Empire as a human-run organization is intriguing, as it lays out the details of how such an evil power gained control over the galaxy. In Andor , high-ranking Imperials like Dedra Meero systematically intimidate and manipulate galactic citizens, all in service of a cut-throat culture. Given this deeper focus on Imperial bureaucracy, the time is right for the highest-ranking Imperial Officer, Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin, to return to a major role in Star Wars. This show, however, featured the character as his typical authoritarian self, adding little about him that audiences did not already know. Tarkin's fixation on order and his cold, harsh demeanor are key to his character, but there is more to Tarkin than this , and the lesser-known aspects of the character deserve exploration onscreen. Andor Season 2 could provide an opportunity for this development, but to give this original trilogy character the focus he deserves, Disney could produce a series focused on his background and ruthless rise to power.

The enforcing Empire was the ultimate fear factor within the original trilogy. Even though Lord Vader was the face of fear and crushed all Imperial officers who failed him, there was one in particular whom he respected, and he even took commands from him. Here are ten thing you may not have known about him:. Tarkin grew up on the planet Eriadu. As a young boy, his parents taught him survival skills in the deep and terrible jungles of that world. He became such a good survivalist and fighter, and he even had his own militia, which he used to protect his own planet, as well as bring forth an uprising. While training at the academy, Tarkin met the Naboo senator Sheev Palpatine, who took a liking to the young officer. Palpatine helped him gain power in the academy, and even encouraged him to become a politician. As mentioned before, Tarkin was a fighter since he was a young boy. He was such a wonderful soldier within the Judicial Forces Academy, and he even served along Jedi throughout several missions.
One of the core reasons for Tarkin's importance to the Empire was his home planet of Eriadu.
An ambitious, ruthless proponent of military power, Wilhuff Tarkin became a favorite of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine and rose rapidly through the Imperial ranks. Shortly after the Empire's creation, he was put in charge of the construction of the Death Star. Tarkin saw the Death Star as a way to crush all dissent to the Empire's rule -- fear of the station's planet-killing superlaser would keep the galaxy's star systems in line. He demonstrated the station's power by destroying Alderaan, but died soon afterwards when the Death Star itself was destroyed. The experience taught Tarkin that life was an ongoing battle for survival, with the strong and smart staying on top by gaining and keeping control of those below them. When the Clone Wars began, Tarkin opted for renewed military service, undertaking a number of covert missions on behalf of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. It was a fateful meeting, though the two would find themselves at odds when Tarkin -- now an admiral -- led the investigation of a terrorist attack on the Jedi Temple and prosecuted Ahsoka Tano in connection with that attack.

Just as Tarkin unhooked his restraints, another kivaroa rammed the GAV upright. Sobeck was about to throw Tarkin into a river of lava when Ahsoka Tano stabbed Sobeck through the back with her lightsaber. Immediately after, the Moff received a communication from a Hiitian general from Salient II's strategic command, who requested the Empire leave and allow Salient to deal with the insurgents, who they were secretly in league with. Skywalker agreed with Tarkin's point of view of the matter. Deployed from Eriadu, Tarkin and his troops broke out from the salient and besieged the Separatists worlds of Triton , Sluis Van and Xagobah. He explained that the Mon Calamari and Quarren warriors were using two primary tactics: They were either holing up in settlements and taking the fight to the corridors, which were unfamiliar to their attackers; or they were scattering into distant empty oceans where the Imperial forces would have to split up to get them all, requiring constant supply. Tarkin hoped that the use of the strong and technologically skilled Wookiees would allow the project to return to pace. However, upon seeing the rebel vessel containing the Grafs, Tarkin ordered his TIEs to pursue it, although it managed to jump to hyperspace before they could intercept it. In order to maintain strict secrecy and to hide his mistress, he assigned Daala to guard the facility, with orders to remain at her post and capture or destroy any stray ships that came across the well-hidden facility. The original source for the incident, the The Rebel Alliance Sourcebook , portrayed Tarkin as an Imperial naval captain who was promoted after the incident. Tarkin gained increasing stature as a vocal supporter of Palpatine and received notice as the Seswenna sector's governor throughout the Clone Wars.

In the novel, Tarkin advocates for the Tarkin Doctrine , a military system based on "the threat of force, rather than force itself". Tarkin realized that Erso was the reason for Krennic's fast advancement in control of the Death Star, and that he had foreseen Obitt's departure for that Empire after being with Lyra Erso, and had used it as an opportunity to remove Tarkin from the project, confirming the Moff's earlier suspicions.
