Having tuning issues with your Les Pauls? We take a look how you might replace the tuners on and get your guitar in tune. A common and historical complaint from guitar players fortunate enough to own a Gibson Les Paul is that of the Kluson tuners. Many deem the Kluson to be the better tuner and have had no issues with them. I, on the other hand, have.

By egoidealmusic July 24, in Gibson Acoustic. I've been playing for years but have never been able to afford a Gibson, so it was mostly vintage Epiphones I do have some really great ones. Just recently got a new job where I could afford a Gibson and got a 50's J not from the actual 50s but one of the new ones modeled on that as I really like the big chunk necks. Had it for about 2 weeks and noticed the tuning peg grommets pulling up and the pegs pulling forward. I don't live near a Gibson authorized repair shop so the folks at Gibson had me send it to their shop in Nashville. Called yesterday and was told they've confirmed my diagnosis but no word on if they can repair or need to replace. Love the guitar amazing tone but am concerned as this seems pretty off. Am wondering if anyone else has had similar issues, and thoughts about how Gibson might handle it. Gibson is very good at making things right. Thanks for the reassurance, Dave! It had been three weeks with no word until I called so I was starting to get tense.
I'm just asking.

Take one out and measure it. I believe that much of the current and older stuff has a 10mm shaft. If so, you won't have to ream anything. Grovers are 10mm. As of mid s, nobody still makes their guitars with 10mm holes, need to reem them or drill them out. Well, by nobody I mean Fender and Gibson. RCT, What size is the shaft on Gibson tuners? I was assuming that all the tuners that bolt down on the top might be the same size. Whatever size the shaft of the tuner is, you can find replacements.

I was honestly afraid that it was doing damage to the inner workings of the part. Not only was it hard to turn, it was inconsistent. This inconsistency made it almost impossible to tune precisely. I would turn the knob as slow as I could as I approached the target tone, and at the last second it would jump and I would pass the target. If I did manage to get it tuned well, it would immediately go back out of tune after the first bend on those strings. His paraphrased response is very telling:. Of course, I did what any rational guitar player would do: I bought it anyway and spent weeks trying to make it work better myself! I wanted to understand the problem, learn from it, and fix it myself.

It almost seems like the holes were just drilled too large so everything was loose. But again, being this is a new guitar the smart play is to sit back and strike a relaxed pose and let Gibson sort it out. They perform their function--tuning unless worn or broken. The reason is that the key has a worm drive and the string post is a cog as here the Deluxe tuner is the same but with a cover :. Had it for about 2 weeks and noticed the tuning peg grommets pulling up and the pegs pulling forward. I ordered an SJ Deluxe back in Joined Sep 3, Messages Yup, I'm not near a trusted Gibson repair facility so I had no choice but to mail it to the repair shop in Nashville, which of course slows the whole thing down. Improper use of the tuners. I am looking at switching out to some locking tuners. Reply to this topic Not trying to put anybody down, but I've seen players who have played for many, many years and despite their own sentiments does not know how to string a guitar.
Are you sick of your Les Paul guitar not staying in tune?

Called yesterday and was told they've confirmed my diagnosis but no word on if they can repair or need to replace. Especially recently, always the possiblity that supply issues could've resulted in other tuners requiring smaller holes needing to be drilled in the headstock. In which way? Dutch53GT New member. Install the app. When I first noticed it I detuned and pushed them back down, but as soon as it was back up to tune it was the same thing and no, I didn't put on super heavy strings or anything that might cause it. If you have to redrill the holes, do not use a power drill. Either way, just feels right to me. It's been most reassuring hearing folks her talk about the good support Gibson puts behind it's products.
