Ghost Recon Breakpoint is a military shooter set in a diverse, hostile, and mysterious open world that you can play entirely solo or in four-player co-op. Somewhere in the South Pacific lies the remote Auroa Archipelago, a vast land of diverse biomes that range from the highest fjords and snowy peaks to the deepest swamps and lava fields. Whether you want to play solo or with up to three co-op allies, you can commandeer a wide range of land, sea, and air vehicles to freely discover and explore Auroa's miles of settlements, wilderness, and roadways. Find your friends in the new social HUB and play the campaign together or enter a PvP arena to take on an intense 4v4 match. You are sent to Auroa for what seems to a be a typical recon mission, but your helicopter is shot down. The island has fallen into the wrong hands. Face your toughest enemies ever, the Wolves, a lethal ex—US military unit gone rogue led by your former bother-in-arms, Colonel Cole D. They have the same training as you, the same experience, and they now wield the world's most advanced combat drones. Injured and cut off from aid, your survival depends on exploring Auroa, finding new allies, and discovering why your former comrades turned traitor. Test your survival skills and adapt to the varied terrains of Auroa, a hostile landscape of deadly enemies and harsh elements. Now when your Ghost takes damage they may also become injured. These injuries will slow you down and reduce your combat effectiveness requiring additional time and resources to heal your Ghost back up to peak fighting condition. Traversing the world of Auroa will push your Ghost to their limits.

Taken at face value, Ghost Recon Breakpoint has been assembled from all the pieces it needs to be a success. There are just too many ideas crammed in without a reason to exist and too many annoying bugs and glitches to get a consistent feel for what Breakpoint is aiming to be. It contradicts its good first impression with its reliance on an all-too-familiar shoot-and-loot formula and a collect-a-thon that wears out its welcome before the end. The opening hours are also really strong from a gameplay standpoint: the tutorial effectively teaches you the intricacies of the branching skill tree, its straightforward if not shallow four-option class system, and the branching, opt-in mission structure. You can easily spend 20 minutes just figuring out how it all works. And you probably will. Geographically, the size of the Auroa map is massive and runs the biome gamut by finding a way to fit swamplands, temperate forests, tropical jungles, lush green valley meadows, seismically jolted cliff faces, and snow-capped mountain ranges into the archipelago.
