CHAD: Something that the running shoe community has become accustomed to and just seems to accept is that when shoes release a new model of an existing shoe line, the updates are incremental. One year we get a change to the upper; the following year, the company addresses the midsole. And so on, and so on, ad nauseam. Very rarely these days does a shoe get a total overhaul. Well, just like the marathon in Cincinnati, I must have just seen a flying pig. Asics channeled its inner Freddie Prinze Jr. The Gel-Cumulus 25, like its max-cushioned chonky big brother, the Gel-Nimbus 25, got a full makeover from the rubber up this year.

Five-star laces, Asics squad.

Taking the shoe out in degree weather, we found the mesh upper to be super breathable, keeping our feet happy all throughout the run. It's amazing how efficient the ventilation holes are in this shoe. Putting our subjective experience to the test, we found it to be true! The Cumulus 25 got a well-deserved score of 4 out of 5 on our breathability scale. We also took a really close look at the fabric under our super fancy microscope, and boy, did it deliver! We found these massive ventilation holes and a relatively-thin engineered mesh. The perfect combination for optimal breathability. After carefully examining the Cumulus under the microscope, we had little doubt that it would fail our Dremel test.

A complete overhaul from the Cumulus 24, the stack height increases to a maximal level and the weight drops to almost that of a lightweight trainer. A brand new shoe, the ASICS Cumulus 25 is another example of the company progressing forward and re-imagining its entire footwear line. It feels very light on foot for how tall and wide it is, making it a versatile option that can certainly do some mild uptempo training if you want a do-it-all shoe. It fits normally to slightly wider throughout the length of shoe but is still decently secure. The toebox tapers initially, then begins to open the more it breaks in. The forefoot is slightly wider, partially thanks to the stretchiness of the mesh. The volume is normal to slightly lower in the forefoot, but this is not really noticeable again thanks to the stretch of the upper. The midfoot is normal in width and secure.

The rearfoot is a touch clunky and could use a lateral heel bevel to smoothen the ride out, but in general the shoe does a solid job on the run. Admittedly, it may not be the most breathable, but thanks to the eccentricity of mid-Atlantic weather, I was testing the shoe in cooler temperatures. Finding a running shoe that fits just right is essential to achieving your fitness and running goals. The 25th edition of the Cumulus model may not be the best choice for pronators. With a reading of Ride, Conclusions and Recommendations The ride focuses on the middle miles of training but can easily range to slower recovery runs. Check out the GT 11 instead. So while not a fully stable neutral shoe, it is close enough that those with mild stability needs will do find, but those with greater needs may need to keep mileage shorter. Our views are based on our extensive history in the footwear industry and years testing and developing footwear. The upper is for sure plush and very close in many respects the fit and feel of the Nimbus 25 upper. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.

Many everyday trainers Brooks Ghost, Saucony Ride, New Balance get almost no hype and excitement when updated, but they are the trainers that get you through most of the running easy and daily runs. Our team recommends the Cumulus 25 for distance running and everyday training. This video shows just one of our measurements. While not glamorous and usually not hyped, the Cumulus gets things done. The toebox tapers initially, then begins to open the more it breaks in. Well, just like the marathon in Cincinnati, I must have just seen a flying pig. There is a lot of material in the upper, with a big padded tongue, padded heel, and foam all over aimed at providing comfort. The midsole is highly cushioned and softer. This is a completely different shoe from the Cumulus 24 becoming a softer, smoother, taller and lighter riding model. It was kind of bizzare, like the slight energy return I got on the flats abandoned me on down and uphills.
