In , Fortnite burst onto the scene as an early-access title as a tower defense title with crafting-survival gameplay elements. It didn't make many waves with this mode, though it did have quite the following, but that would all change when the Battle Royale mode arrived on the scene a few months later. While the free-to-play Battle Royale has become a cultural phenomenon, the base mode Save The World quickly petered away. It never grew as popular as the Battle Royale, but the PvE campaign was a crucial milestone in Fortnite 's journey to success. Despite being overshadowed by the explosive success of Battle Royale, Save the World played a crucial role in establishing the game's core mechanics and building system. Both of these features are now synonymous with the still popular Battle Royale experience. Fortnite: Save the World is a cooperative hybrid- third-person looter shooter tower defense sandbox survival video game developed and published by Epic Games , part of the game Fortnite. Players gain rewards through these missions to improve their hero characters, support teams, and arsenal of weapon and trap schematics to be able to take on more difficult missions. The game was initially supported through microtransactions to purchase in-game loot boxes that could be used towards these upgrades. A standalone battle royale game version, Fortnite Battle Royale , was released for the same platforms in September ; in associated with this change, Epic dropped the use of loot boxes, instead opting for direct purchase of cosmetics through in-game V-bucks currency. Following the release, the player-versus-environment mode was officially distinguished as "Save the World". The survivors found ways to construct "storm shields", a field that cleared the storm clouds from immediately overhead and reduced the attacks from husks, and used these to set up survivor bases across the globe. Most missions take place on procedurally-generated landscapes. When they showed this approach to other developers, they found that the concept was fortnite: save the world idea that others had had but never worked towards any final product, and from that knew they had something with potential to build on.
