Final Fantasy 16 is a very story-focused experience, showing the game's events through Clive's age during different touchstones in his life. Throughout the story, the simple goal of freeing bearers from their hardships becomes a lot more complex as Ultima has other plans for Clive. Clive does in fact survive at the end of Final Fantasy. Here is my rundown of the last events in the game: 1 Clive beats Ultimate and absorbs his power. Clive heals Joshuas body, but as it was already stated, the Phoenix can only mend flesh and not the spirit. So while Clive is able to heal Joshuas body, Joshua has been dead for too long at that point and his spirit is gone. In process Joshuas body is destroyed as well so Joshua couldn't have survived and written the book in the end. Magic is gone for good. His arm has been calcified.
