Fates and Furies Quotes Showing of What she did not tell him balanced neatly with what she did. Still, there are untruths made of words and untruths made of silences, and Mathilde had only ever lied to Lotto in what she never said. Marriage is made of lies. Kind ones, mostly. She never lied.
Oh my word! I'm totally fine with a realistic description of the difficulties of married life, but I usually steer clear from anything that boasts cheating, resentment, etc, as normal.

I'm 2 chapters in and, while it's an easy enough read, there is nothing enjoyable about the book. The writing is highly contrived and does nothing to make the main character sympathetic or even interesting.

Still, there are untruths made of words and untruths made of silences, and Mathilde had only ever lied to Lotto in what she never said. Oh man, oh man, oh man. It is simply a shallow read that I won't remember by the end of the month. Much has been made of the plot twist that I didn't find all that twisty. I'm aware I was often 'detached'. The depth and levels of understanding at work in our lives, the subterranean currents running beneath our feet, the invisible lines of randomness and chance crisscrossing in our midst, the past informing the present, the inner life feeding the one we present to others, the ocean that sometimes lies between the two, the elemental, character-defining events of our youth perpetually tinting our actions. Yes, one of our protagonists is called Lotto. Things are really starting to fall into place and I cannot wait to see where book 4 takes Thea and Wilder. Stop and use your time more wisely. Ummmm, so if the milk tastes like manure, it's contaminated! But after reaching the end of the book, I vehemently disagree.
Still, people talk about it. Critics love it, or — even better — debate its merits.
Probably would have given up except for two things: 1 I was listening to this and not reading it so I could do other things at the same time 2 I read this was Obama's favorite book last year. The world-building is so cleanly integrated into the storytelling that it blows my mind. I'm 2 chapters in and, while it's an easy enough read, there is nothing enjoyable about the book. I absolutely intend to reread the whole series so far so I can experience this all again. Even from her impossibly high starting point, Lauren Groff just keeps getting better and better. In their way. This is the love story of Lotto and Mathilde. I am not one to stay with something that bores me, and I did wonder about this one, initially. This book really took the cake for me in the tavern. Insecurities, vulnerabilities, misunderstandings, and missed opportunities. I'm not sure that I want to spend more time in the company of such an unattractive character, and agree with others below that the writing style seems contrived and overblown. I think I can count the number of books on one hand the amount of times my reactions were not just "omg that's sad" and simple theories, but instead my reactions were feral screaming in my friends' texts because I was so unhinged and engrossed in the story. Who is it who decides what I, the reader will like; who is it who calls this a masterpiece?
I think, what is it excellent idea.
