Fallout 4 main story quests

Welcome to Polygon's guide to Fallout 4. Bethesda's expansive post-apocalyptic role-playing game will lead players down many different paths.

Whenever people complete the main storyline of a video game there is a huge sense of accomplishment, but also a feeling of, 'what now? As anybody who has played a Fallout game will know, there is so much going on that the game certainly does not end when the main quest has been completed, and that is especially true in Fallout 4, which is arguably the strongest game in the franchise. When the main quest for the game has been accomplished, there is still so much that can be done within the game. Updated July 6, by Ben Jessey: Anyone who has played a Fallout game knows the main story is only a small part of the overall experience. In fact, some of the best things in the game are outside the main narrative. So, when you've completed the main quests, there is still a litany of enjoyable things to do.

Welcome one, welcome all to our walkthrough for Fallout: New Vegas. Some of you may have used our massive Fallout 3 walkthrough, in which case I welcome you back. You guys should know what to expect here. For newcomers, however, let us give you a little rundown on what you can expect in our walkthrough. For starters, all screenshots are expandable. That is to say, if you click on any screenshot in the guide, it will expand to a much bigger, crisper version for you to examine. Simply click that same image again to reset it to its original size. Additionally, we've sorted the main missions as sequentially as possible, but keep in mind that there will be times when you may be able to go through things in a different order or not at all, depending on how you choose to go through the game. Speaking of choices, that brings up an important point. Our walkthrough is essentially based on playing through as a good guy. We'll do our best to point things out that those playing with a bad slant might want to be made aware of, but generally, you can expect our walkthrough to cover things from a good guy's point of view. Surprisingly, this won't change the main feel of the game or how you go through, so this walkthrough will still be useful to all. Within the walkthrough, expect to find myriad details on every detail of completing your various tasks, and remember that we've included lists of integral steps to each mission, as well as important items to find and collect though you should keep in mind that item payloads may change from playthrough to playthrough. Do remember that our walkthrough only covers main tasks that are mandatory for the completion of Fallout: New Vegas.

Fallout 4's Commonwealth is pretty big, but more importantly it's extremely dense. There's so much to see and do, and plenty of it doesn't even register in your quest log. The least we can do is put together a checklist of the game's main content, so you've got some idea of what's out there and how far along you are. Below you'll find a list of main story quests, provided by factions and companions, as well as the most important side quests. We've also included a few notes on how to find these quests where appropriate. This is a far from comprehensive list of what's available in Fallout 4; think of it as a map pointing you to the key branches of what's on offer.

On the following two pages I've detailed all story quests with or without achievements from up until a crucial save point near the story finale. Where appropriate I have weaved in between different faction quests, and as the story continues we'll transition into the specific faction quests and the order you should do them, to keep the ending as open as possible for as long as possible. We will however, reach a point where you must make a decision about which faction to ally with as you wrap up the story. This is where you will make a save, before choosing which ending to do first. You must complete both endings to unlock all story achievements. Throughout the walkthrough I give mention to magazines, bobbleheads, and companions that you want to be sure to pick up along the way. As we all know, you'll start off in Sanctuary Hills before the bombs drop. You'll open up with modifying your character's face, before exploring your house. See the General Hints and Tips page for more on character customizing.
