The F10 5 Series shares a platform with the F01 7 Series full-size luxury sedan and the F12 6 Series executive-sized grand tourers. Introduced in , the M5 model is powered by the BMW S63 twin-turbocharged V8 engine coupled to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. The Gran Turismo F07 is the first and only 5 Series to be produced in a fastback body style with a hatchback truck opening. The 6th-gen BMW 5 Series was given its only facelift for the model year and it was so subtle, it would go unnoticed by some. The F10's general appearance is a lot less out there and far more reserved than its more controversial E60 predecessor, which was designed under the creative leadership of Chris Bangle. The front light clusters retain their shape but are new, with flat-bottomed corona-ring daytime running lights and less fussy turn signals 1. The front bumper is new too 2 , with the V motive blending into the lower bumper a lot more smoothly and the lower valance being completely redesigned with new round fog lights 3. On normal trims, new C-shaped chrome applique is applied to the outer thirds of the lower valance 4 , with the lower air dam narrowing in the center. The rear is tweaked only slightly and looks virtually identical to the model, save for a new bumper 1 with a horizontal chrome strip running between the two bumper-mounted red reflectors 2 - which are themselves slightly retouched.
