Sergio Perez believes that there is room for improvement for Red F1 p2 following the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, despite the team securing a one-two result. This saw him work his way up to P2, while team mate Max Verstappen took an assured victory up ahead.

The Spaniard rounded off a fine day in P1, beating out Geirge Russell in the Mercedes by two-tenths, and also Max Verstappen , who could only manage P3. Once again, there were problems with drain covers on the track, this time in the pitlane. As a result, the start of the session was delayed by ten minutes while checks were happening for loose bolts holding down the pitlane drain covers. It was another busy start once FP1 finally got underway, with all 20 cars going onto the street circuit of Jeddah within the first five minutes. The medium tyres were the tyre of choice for many drivers, and it was Verstappen and his RB20 setting the early pace, carrying on from where he left off in FP1. Alonso also did the same, as he was right behind Verstappen in his Aston Martin , showing some very promising pace in the warm and windy conditions in the Saudi Arabian night. There were some troubles with traffic throughout the session, with Lewis Hamilton and Logan Sargeant almost colliding on track.

George Russell had the top time for a long time, but in the end the Red Bull driver proved to be faster in his RB The difference was mainly made when both drivers were running on soft tyres. Verstappen was much faster then and made quite a gap with the Brit on the timesheet. Russell eventually finished fourth. Alonso finished in P2, being faster than Verstappen's teammate Perez. Mercedes and Ferrari both went into the Abu Dhabi race weekend with a chance to finish second in the championship. In the end the Silver Arrows clinched the runners up spot, but it was a hard fought P2 with the team pipping their scarlet rivals to the tune of just 1. It was a tense ending though, with Leclerc letting the third man on the road Sergio Perez through, knowing he was carrying a time penalty. The Monegasque had hoped that by picking up DRS and sling-shotting past the Ferrari, Perez would have enough speed to build a five-second gap to Russell, which would have relegated the Mercedes to P4 and seen Ferrari grab second in the championship. But one thing Leclerc did not do was drive deliberately slowly to hold Russell up, and in the afterglow of the 22nd race of the season, Toto Wolff paid special mention to the Monegasque. I also think Charles at the end was sportsmanlike behaviour, not trying to slow down [Russell]. Two great teams, two great brands that fought to the end.

Daniel Ricciardo was garage-bound for the first 10 minutes of FP2 with McLaren working on the rear of his car. Soon after emerging, the Australian brought out a red flag having lost the rear of the car and smashed into the barriers at Swimming Pool. The session was resumed with under 40 minutes to play. After the red flag, softs began to come into play and the time attack began, the digits tumbling until Leclerc set the fastest lap of 1m Norris had a near-miss at Turn 1 after putting in a lap good for P5, 0. Fernando Alonso was over three-tenths off the AlphaTauri in eighth, his team mate Esteban Ocon only managing a lap good enough for P18 in the other Alpine.

The drain covers required extensive attention following the truncated first practice session, resulting in a long delay before the second session began — eventually beginning at 2. With the drivers finally free to get some laps in and learn the track, there were plenty of lock-ups and off-track moments as they figured out how to go quicker — not helped by the circuit surface not offering much grip at the early point in the weekend — although none of the incidents resulted in contact with the walls or any car damage. Max Verstappen was one of the drivers to slide off into an escape area, as was Sergio Perez, with the Red Bulls having a surprisingly understated session. Verstappen also had a late moment at Turn 5 that brought out the yellow flags, but was able to continue.
