Two drivers failed to make it to the finish, with Ocon retiring late on in the second of the Alpines and Yuki Tsunoda watching the action from the sidelines after a reported engine failure on the formation lap put his AlphaTauri out before the race had even started.

Carlos Sainz led away from the start, carving across the track to cut off Max Verstappen into the first braking zone to hold onto the lead after taking his first pole position of the season. But on lap 15, after a staunch defence, Sainz locked up and offered Verstappen a run at him through Curva Grande, putting him alongside and eventually ahead of the Ferrari driver for the lead. And Verstappen was very quickly able to stretch his legs and open up a healthy lead over the Ferrari duo, with Sergio Perez closing in from behind after a daring move on George Russell in what was becoming a heated battle over the podium positions. Perez and Leclerc got extremely close together into the Variante della Roggia as they fought over P3, before the Mexican was able to get ahead a lap later and into the podium places. And when Perez was finally able to get past Sainz, the battle for third erupted between the Ferrari drivers as Sainz and Leclerc fought for the final place on the podium at Monza. At the front, Verstappen held on to take a record 10th win in a row in Formula 1, with Perez taking second and the Ferrari duo fighting all the way to the line, with Sainz just about coming out ahead of Leclerc to take his place on the podium.
