In this article, the years represent the final tournaments of the European Championship, and are not meant to correspond to the actual dates when the qualification matches were played. The and qualifications were knock-out tournaments. The four quarter-final-winning teams qualified for the final stages, and one of them was chosen to host the competition. From onwards, a group stage began to be used as the main, or sole, component of qualification. In , and , the winners of the eight groups advanced to a quarter-final stage, which was still part of the qualifying. The four quarter-final winners progressed to the finals. Again, the host nation was selected among the four finalists. From , the hosting rights would be assigned in advance, and the host teams would be guaranteed automatic qualification. The format of the finals was expanded to feature 8 teams. Winners of qualifying groups now proceeded to the finals directly. The , , and qualifications included seven groups, the winners of which would join the hosts in the finals, although in one winner was eventually banned from appearing and was replaced by the runner-up of its group. From , a team format was employed for the main tournament. Runners-up in qualifying groups now could also gain access to the finals. Play-off pairings were introduced as a second opportunity for teams that narrowly miss out direct qualification.

Twenty-four teams will fight to win the championship, three years after the last tournament, which saw Italy win after penalties against England at Wembley. The tournament will start on June 14 and will end on July 14 in Berlin. Germany are already qualified since they will host the event, but the German National Team have a new coach, after Hansi Flick was sacked last month after some disappointing results at the World Cup, when Germany were knocked out in the group stage. Former Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann has replaced Flick and will take charge of the team at the Euros next summer. Apart from the hosts, there are 23 teams that still need to qualify for the tournament, with twenty teams that will be determined by the standings of ten group stages, while the remaining three spots will be determined by the play-offs that will take place in March , also thanks to the standings of the UEFA Nations League. Teams that fail in the qualifying group stage can still qualify for the final tournament through the play-offs. Four teams from each league that have not already qualified for the European Championship finals will compete in the play-offs of their league. The play-off berths were first allocated to each Nations League group winner, and if any of the group winners already qualify for the European Championship finals, then to the next-best ranked team of the league. Here's the situation as things stand. As things stand, Scotland are very well positioned to win the group and might be one of the next sides to qualify for the tournament.

Group qualifying on the road to Euro is complete, and we now know 21 of the 24 teams who will compete in Germany next summer. Three places are still up for grabs through the playoffs -- with paths created via the final positions of the UEFA Nations League. Germany will be in Pot 1 as hosts, joined by the five group winners with the best record in qualifying. The three playoff winners will be in Pot 4. There will be six groups of four teams, with each group will having one team from each pot. So, there could be a group of Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Italy. The League A path is then completed with a team from League B team. That means five nations from League B get a playoff, the four by right and one to fill up League A.
