While studying the Boiling Isles' nature and working on a portal back to the Human Realm, Philip discovered that Caleb fell in love with a witch named Evelyn and killed him for this, before deciding to eliminate all life on the Isles so he would be rewarded and hailed as a hero back in the Human Realm. With help from the Collector , Philip assumed the new identity of Belos and became the Emperor of the Isles, lying to his subjects that he can speak to the Titan and thus knows how to cast magic properly, while hiding the fact his Coven System was created to kill them all with the Draining Spell. He is also the arch-nemesis of both Luz Noceda and his creation Hunter , and the former master of Lilith Clawthorne , Kikimora , the Coven Heads and numerous others.

Emperor Belos is the main antagonist of The Owl House. Originally a human named Philip Wittebane , he arrived in the Boiling Isles from Gravesfield, Connecticut during the Deadwardian Era the mids in the Human Realm in pursuit of his brother, Caleb , who was spirited away to the realm, keeping a written record of his experiences on the Boiling Isles as he endeavored to find a way to return to the Human Realm. Due to his inherent intense hatred of witches and magic , with which he gained additional resentment due to the Isles' prejudice against humans causing him to be alienated, Philip would eventually conspire to eliminate the Isles and its inhabitants as a whole in an attempt to save humanity from their supposed wickedness. In order to carry through with this plot, Philip would take on a new identity as a witch named Belos. He claimed to the witches that he had the ability to speak to the isle, that they were misusing magic by mixing it, and that he was the only one who had the right to do so, convincing them and creating a system of covens to restrict the witches' use of magic and knowledge, and those who resisted were declared "wild witches" who would face great punishments. Sometime later he was named emperor of the islands, gaining the respect and devotion of all, unaware of his deception.

With only an abridged season 3 to wrap up its story, The Owl House was only expected to do so much. The odds were against it from the get-go. As such a plot-heavy show — a rarity for Disney Channel — it seemed impossible that The Owl House could pull off what it set out to do, when dealt such a shitty hand. And yet showrunner Dana Terrace and the rest of the creators on the show manage to defy all expectations, telling a tight emotional story that resonates far beyond just three episodes.

Despite this treatment, Lilith did not question his words, nor did she fight back. Getting nearly hit by a fireball apparently caused his hidden scar to ' melt ' during "King's Tide", and he ultimately meets his end by a combination of fire and water in the boiling rains of the isles, dissolving his form into immobile sludge over a matter of minutes. Philip fits the criteria of a charismatic but flawed loner with strong ideals and a willingness to do things that are socially reprehensible to do what's right. For the next years, Belos and the Collector worked in secret to prepare a draining spell, which would wipe out everyone on the Boiling Isles who had a coven sigil. In addition, Belos' hatred for Evelyn also extended to anything that reminded him of her. We'll have our revenge on… ugh, "unity" is so hard to rhyme. His path led him to Hunter once more, whom he briefly possessed, and despite Luz and her friends' attempts to thwart him, Belos managed to travel back to the Demon Realm. Don't just stand there! Bad People Abuse Animals : An Establishing Character Moment for Belos in his introduction is breaking an animal-esque palisman and then absorbing its magical essence to relieve himself of his chronic illness, much to Luz's horror. Always Someone Better : Zigzagged with Luz when it comes to glyphs. In the grand scheme of things, the Owl Lady's life is inconsequential Belos was only mentioned by other characters for most of The Owl House 's first season before finally making his debut in episode Detrimental Determination : A huge problem with Philip's determination is that he never knows when to quit: Belos desires to create "a better version" of his brother Caleb with the Grimwalkers, but he ends up killing them for not living up to his expectations. The town seal of Gravesfield was embroidered in gold on the left breast of the coat. Hunter and numerous animals would later fall victim to it, and as it grew more powerful, Belos eventually recovered his corporeal form.
During the 17th century, orphaned brothers Philip and Caleb Wittebane arrived in Gravesfield, Connecticut to become witch hunters, where they met a witch named Evelyn who convinced Caleb to follow her into the Demon Realm. Philip followed them, believing Caleb to have been led astray, and soon discovered that Caleb had fallen in love with Evelyn during his time in the Demon Realm. This drove an enraged Philip to kill his own brother in a knife fight, which in turn lead Evelyn to curse Philip as he fled, forcing him to consume the souls of palismen over the centuries to stay alive.
But when he discovered that Caleb and Evelyn were in love, he became so enraged that he attacked the two and ended up killing Caleb. Odalia fearfully believes that he is referring to her, but he is actually talking about Raine. When the Collector taught him the Draining Spell and he realized he needed to gain the voluntary cooperation of the inhabitants to enact the Coven system for his plan, he re-invented himself as 'Belos' and intentionally obscures his ultimate aims under the guise of 'teaching' the people of the Isles the correct way to use magic, and claiming he alone is enforcing the Titan's will and can talk to it. A minor exception to this was shown with his attachment to his "nephew", Hunter , whom he acted more gentle and calm toward. And even when he loses his human form and is thrown back into the Human Realm he longed to return, Belos manages to put himself together and immediately seeks a way back to the Demon Realm just to finish his plan in spite of the dangers on the other side. When the Collector confronts Belos after he leaves them trapped in the In-Between Realm and even mocks them about it, he seems to expect them to spare him just because they're free. Don't just stand there! Notably, Belos only sees the ghosts of Caleb and the Grimwalkers rather than the ghosts of the witches and demons he's killed over years, highlighting how Belos only feels guilt for murdering humans rather than other sentient races — but if it comes down to a choice between allowing humans to deny his delusional perceptions or upholding them, Belos will always twist the rationality of the situation to justify silencing his dissenters despite this. And in "For the Future", Belos shows explicit hatred against the real deal when confronted by a hallucination of Caleb as he buries all guilt and rationalizes it as just "saving his soul", even telling him to "shut up" to keep his own self-delusions as a hero.
