The original Erae Touch was one of the more interesting MPE controllers to come out in the last few years. But it's been on the market for less than three years. So it was something of a surprise when Embodme showed up to NAMM with Erae II, the next iteration of its customizable controller with significant upgrades and one unexpected new feature. Now, it's important to note that the version of the Erae II I was able to test out was very early prototype. There were a few bugs, the construction definitely had some rough edges.

The Erae Touch boasts a large inch surface, which is covered in an array of force sensors and multi-colour LEDs. Thanks to its soft-silicone display, the device can be played — by touching, swiping, or even hitting with a drumstick — with a range of expression spanning vibratos, portamentos or pizzicatos. It offers 10 simultaneous points of contact and a host of customisation options via its companion app, Erae Lab. Through Erae Lab, music-makers can customize their device using simple drag-and-drop elements. The software represents the control surface on-screen, making it easy to designate control zones such as faders, XY pads, drum pads, multi-track step sequencers and much more.
