A short poem, it is moody and full of descriptive imagery, yet it contains no adjectives, similes or metaphors. Frost certainly was a master wordsmith. Navigating the icy, snowy roads in winter is a very nerve-wracking experience. I was in a grumpy morning mood and yearning for warmer weather. The sun was glaring on the snow that had fallen the night before and I was having difficulty seeing. My drive takes me along a road that runs parallel to the Delaware River, and trees form a canopy over the roadway. Gusts of wind were blowing talcum-powdery snow from the branches and it looked like glitter in the sunlight.

In other words, this seemingly insignificant event — the snow-dust falling on him — shifts his perspective entirely. A key theme of the poem is the transformative power of nature. Even a small gesture from the natural world, like a gentle snowfall caused by chance, can have a profound impact on our mood and outlook. It suggests that nature offers solace from the more challenging aspects of living. For one thing, nature can remind us of the bigger picture beyond our individual troubles. Such regret and remorse can weigh heavily on us and darken our mood for the rest of the day, and perhaps longer. But we can also run the risk of placing too much importance or emphasis on our actions, believing that mistakes we made, or our conduct, are more consequential and more damaging than they really are. The crow upsetting the snow in the hemlock tree offers a gentle reminder to the speaker that he should put his own troubles into perspective, and remember that he is just an insignificant part of a much larger natural ecosystem. For once, being reminded how small and unimportant we really are as individuals is seen as a positive rather than a negative insight. The dust of snow, or snow-dust, represents small but significant changes that can bring joy and clarity.

The poem's speaker, possibly the poet himself, is initially unhappy. But a sprinkling of snow, dislodged by a crow in the tree above the speaker, brings an element of surprise that partly "save[s]" the speaker's bad day.
