We decided to animate them to bring delightful movement to a duolingo art screen, but the icons wound up becoming valuable attention-grabbers themselves: learners spend more time watching the entire animation play through than they did quickly glancing at a static illustration. By Kim Lyons. Language app Duolingo is unveiling a new cast of characters that it hopes will help users better learn new languages, even during the toughest lessons. The characters will act as guides within the app, cheering you on if you get an answer correct, or reacting in a disappointed or sassy way if you get one wrong. The nine characters of Duolingo Project World all have unique personalities, and serve as guides to make a new language feel more familiar. We wanted to establish some emotional connection, and have characters that encourage users, by giving them positive reinforcement. In designing the characters that inhabit Duolingo World, Hartman says the team wanted to keep the same design elements of their mascot owl Duo, with his large eyes, simple body shape, and detached feet. So a girl with purple hair and lots of sharp angles became an emo. They went through many shapes and iterations before arriving at their final nine designs, Hartman adds. They hired a voice actor for each character, and worked with Microsoft to create custom text-to-speech fonts. Choosing the names proved a bigger challenge than Hartman was expecting.

This goes on for a while, until you eventually get one final message. We decided to animate them to bring delightful movement to a high-ROI screen, but the icons wound up becoming valuable attention-grabbers themselves: learners spend more time watching the entire animation play through than they did quickly glancing at a static illustration. The round, bouncy Duo we know and love today is the perfect companion for language learners all over the world.
Switching to vector-based illustration software also helped speed up our pipeline. This is a huge and ongoing task, but having a defined art style, characterized by minimalism and playfulness, allows us to face big illustration and animation demands without sacrificing quality of design. Once we have those mission-critical shapes, we give them space in the composition to be clearly silhouetted — the first step to making the image easily recognizable. But by bringing visual delight to the app experience, Duolingo artists are helping learners stay entertained and committed to their language goals. A big hurdle of language learning is getting over the fear of making mistakes. Get Started Designing Better. Not enough details, and learners might be confused. Making the switch to mathematically calculated curves of vector-based illustration now makes it much easier to create illustrations that work everywhere: we can scale up and down for various phone and tablet screen sizes. Making them more expressive and more vibrant would mean the app would be more engaging and fun. When the visuals are playful, the intimidation falls away, and learners actually look forward to coming back to practice every day. Just me?
