It was one of at least five dance halls that featured live music by Irish and Canadian bands in the midth century. Courtesy of Frank Storer. For more than forty years—from the s to the s—Irish, Scottish, and Acadian fiddling bands played to large crowds of immigrants from Ireland and the Canadian Maritime provinces. As a transit hub for the elevated train and streetcar lines, Dudley Square became a magnet for immigrant musicians and fans, a place where traditional Celtic music met new American styles and practices. Map of the Dudley Street dance halls ca. Courtesy of Dan Zedek. Irish and Canadian immigrants first brought Celtic music to Boston in the mid th century, hosting dances and house parties in their neighborhoods. In the early twentieth century, dancehalls in the South End featured Irish and Canadian bands, but in the s, the scene shifted out to Roxbury, where new transit lines were bringing growing numbers of immigrants and their children. Around Dudley and Warren Streets, Irish and Canadian newcomers erected buildings for their fraternal orders, with large meeting halls on the upper floors. Soon enterprising migrants started booking local fiddle bands to play dances there on Thursday and Saturday nights. Canadian bands were especially popular in the twenties and thirties, including groups led by Scottish-style Cape Breton fiddlers Johnnie Archie MacDonald and Alec Gillis, leader of the Inverness Serenaders. Most bands played a mixture of traditional Celtic music such as reels, jigs, and hornpipes and popular American styles such as waltzes and foxtrots.

Dudley Street is a main street in the Melbourne central business district , linking the northern Docklands district to the north-western corner of the CBD. Dudley Street begins at Footscray Road and heads east as a six-lane, dual-carriageway road, nearly immediately intersecting with Wurundjeri Way and then under the North Melbourne rail lines, and continues east as a four-lane, single-carriageway road, crossing Spencer and King streets, and ends at the intersection with Peel Street in the Melbourne CBD , on the western border of the Queen Victoria Market. At its western end, the Depression -era slum camp known as Dudley Flats was occupied by unemployed and homeless people in the s. Its most famous landmark is the concert venue, Festival Hall. The western end of Dudley Street underwent major reconstruction, which included lowering of the outer lanes to provide a clearance of 5 metres under the existing rail bridges, a new intersection at Wurundjeri Way and a remodelled intersection at Footscray Road; work commenced in April and was completed in November It was re-routed to run further west, turning north and west along Peel and Victoria Streets to Carlton instead, in
Nubian Square formerly Dudley Square is the primary commercial center of the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston , Massachusetts, located at the intersection of Dudley Street and Washington Street. It has long been the center of African American culture in Boston, prior to which the area was primarily Jewish. For most of the twentieth century, the square was a multi-mode transportation hub, centered at Dudley station, now Nubian station of the Washington Street Elevated , which closed in In the colonial and post-revolutionary periods, Washington Street was the only connection between Shawmut Peninsula , on which Old Boston was located, and the mainland. Nubian Square is located on the mainland side of what was the Washington Street isthmus, an area known as The Neck. Notable development began in Roxbury in the 19th century, and Nubian Square served as a commercial center in this period. As Boston introduced streetcar service through the Boston Elevated Railway , Dudley Square station was opened in , leading to another boom in Dudley Square's importance and reinforcing its status as a community hub. After the Boston Elevated Railway's reorganization into the Metropolitan Transit Authority [3] in , streetcar service to Dudley Square Square was curtailed and replaced with bus service through the s and s.

Tony Hernandez remembers playing as a child on the vacant lots in the Dudley Street neighborhood of Boston. In the s, white flight and disinvestment had so devastated this neighborhood that more than 20 percent of the land—1, lots—lay vacant. Today, Hernandez owns a home on this land, one of units of permanently affordable housing. His home is surrounded by parks and gardens, a town common, community center, charter school, community greenhouse, and several urban farms. This transformation was led by residents of the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative, who in the late s established a community land trust to take democratic ownership of the land and guide development.
