Forget the Iron Throne, it's the island of Dragonstone that's captured the attention of Game of Thrones fans this season. And if you're hoping to visit Daenerys Targaryen's home, you're in luck - the island isn't the product of CGI, it's a real place! Although it doesn't have dragons, dragon rock game of thrones, or a giant castle.
From Dorne to the Iron Islands to the North, visitors arrived to bend the knee. Some 75, tourists walked, literally, in the steps of Daenerys this July. According to the Spanish daily El Pais, that means some 2, people a day, made the monumental schlep up a narrow and crumbling flight of ancient stairs in order to feel a touch closer to the mother of dragons. The steps are real; the palace, in the show, is computer generated. Those steps that Daenerys and Jon Snow walk are part of the very real, roughly 1,year-old, man-made land bridge leading out to a monastery named for Saint John the Baptist, which is tethered to the coast by a wisp of land and a bridge. In a millennium of pilgrimages, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe has never seen tourism numbers like these. Thus far it has been clanging nonstop all summer.

Like all good pilgrimage sites worth their salt, Gaztelugatxe takes a little bit of effort to reach. There are steps up a winding, man-made stone causeway from the Basque mainland to the rugged, wind-beaten islet. Looking at the path now, I can only imagine the plight of pilgrims, having walked hundreds of miles to reach the hermitage that sits atop the rock, edging their way across in inclement weather and riotous storms. Recently, fans of prestige fantasy TV drama have been making another sort of pilgrimage to the site. The winding staircase was transformed by the show into Dragonstone, the ancestral home of the Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen. However, rather than landing on the beaches surrounding the Hermitage, we were met at the port by a friendly guide and travelled the 50 minutes to castle rock by bus as part of a Princess Cruise shore excursion. From afar, or the viewpoint situated beside the carpark, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is impressive. In Game of Thrones, the hermitage has been eschewed for an enormous, magnificent CGI fortress, but the church is beautiful in its own right. Religious rites and legends at Gaztelugatxe — like the bell ringing and the journeys people undertake to reach the rock — are intrinsically tied to the sea. The hermitage is full of devotional offerings: model boats, paintings and photographs. They are made by sailors and fishermen to the saint as a sign of thanks for protecting their boats from the dangers of the Bay of Biscay. When the tuna season begins, fishermen come to Gaztelugatxe to ask the saint for good weather, good health and good fishing. Even the most up-to-date 21st-century tuna fishermen, despite being fitted with the most innovative technology still come to Gaztelugatxe to perform the rite before heading to the tropics in search of fish. Although there are steps from the shore to the church, legend has it that the saint only needed 3 steps to reach the hermitage from the nearby town of Bermeo.

Dragonstone [1] is a volcanic island in the Narrow Sea that guards the entrance to Blackwater Bay and the sea approaches to King's Landing , off the east coast of Westeros. In "Dragonstone," Samwell Tarly makes a game-changing discovery: Dragonstone sits atop a mine of dragon glass. Earlier in the episode, Jon declared it more precious than gold and ordered his people to find every last bit of dragon glass they can get their hands on. Other than that, it is not a particularly useful material, being too brittle to make weapons and too sharp to use in building. The other significant advantage of holding Dragonstone island is its strategic position, guarding the entrance to Blackwater Bay and King's Landing.
