You can read our review of the series here, but now we're going to dive into everything you should know about this TV series even if you've already read the original book trilogy. Lyra Belaqua, the protagonist of the series, is a year-old girl living in a place called Oxford. It's reminiscent of Britain in the early 20th century, but everything is just slightly off. They have electricity, but called it "anbaric" instead of "electric" in the books. There are helicopters, but those are called "gyrocopters," air travel is done by zeppelin instead of airplane, and so on. The title of Pullman's trilogy titles comes from a section of an epic poem by John Milton called "Paradise Lost," first published in These themes of religion are prevalent throughout all three of Pullman's novels, but not as openly discussed in the first volume. In Lyra's world, there's a religious order called the Magisterium which holds power much in the way the Catholic Church did and does over parts of the world. The creators of HBO's adaptation have said that the Magisterium is not meant to be a pure analogy for Catholicism, but more about the general dynamic of institutional power working at odds with progressive academic study.
