Xol, Will of the Thousands was one of the five Worm Gods , ancient paracausal creatures that mastered the Sword Logic and reputed as the creators of the Hive pantheon. He was worshipped by his High Priest Nokris, Herald of Xol and the Grasp of Nokris prior to his death and defection, and is the main antagonist of the Warmind expansion. Making a pact with Oryx's estranged son, Nokris , the two fled their families and sought a new world to rule. At some point either before or after Nokris's excommunication, Xol created the Ogre Golgoroth to challenge Oryx. However, his kin, Eir , intervened to remake the beast into an even more monstrous and powerful shape to serve Oryx instead and protect the Tablets of Ruin. After Nokris' excommunication by Oryx, Nokris and Xol departed from the rest of the Hive and set out to find a new world to rule. Xol and Nokris engaged with the Warmind Rasputin and became trapped under the Hellas Basin of Mars , before being reawakened by multiple Warsat impacts in the region and the Traveler's reawakening centuries later. Upon reawakening, Xol and his worshippers, the Grasp of Nokris, sought to gain control of Mars by destroying the Warmind Rasputin. Their plans were interrupted by the intervention of the Guardian , who defeated Nokris and attempted to execute a plan by Commander Zavala to lure Xol into a trap with a Light-filled shard of the Traveler. Xol appeared before the Guardian and assaulted them telepathically, rendering them unconscious.
Together, they spread more larvae to the Krill to create the warmongering conquerors known as the Hive, detailed in The Taken King expansion lore in Destiny as well.
The Worm Gods are a race of extremely large worm-like creatures with immense paracausal powers. They share a symbiotic relationship with the Hive, who revere them as gods. So far, only 6 Worm Gods have been identified. They were discovered by the Witness and its Disciples within the core of the planet Fundament. At the Witness' command, the Lubraean disciple Rhulk corrupted them, bending them to the will of the Darkness, and abducted their mother, Xita the Nurturing Worm in order to breed more Worms for their own use. Much later, the Witness contacted the children of the late Osmium King of the Krill and warned them about an impending tsunami that threatened their race with extinction, guiding them to Fundament's core in search of a solution. In actual fact, this tsunami was never going to happen, it was lie conceived by the Witness in order to corrupt the Krill.

The Worms are servants of the Witness who draw their Darkness powers directly from the Sword Logic that it had introduced to its progenitors. It is through a pact with the Worms that the proto- Hive or "Krill" became what they are today and launched their conquest of the universe. All Hive are bound symbiotically with a larva farmed from a mother Worm , which drives them to feed off constant conquest and destruction lest the Worm grow unsatisfied and consume them instead. While the ultimate origins of the Worms are unknown, the Lore Book Unveiling seems to indicate they may be as old as the universe itself. According to Unveiling , in the primordial state before time or the universe began, entities existed which derived sustenance from the gradient between "what was and what might be.
