The road to the Kentucky Derby will kick into gear this weekend with the first major prep race in New Orleans, derby preps. The Risen Star is one of six races in the series that award the winner 50 qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby on May 4 at Churchill Downs, derby preps. The eight major races in the series — starting March 23 with the Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park and Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds — derby preps award points to the winner and 50 to the runner-up. Keeneland also will host the final points race — the Lexington — on April 13, with 20 points going to the derby preps.

Held each year at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Horses compete in the Kentucky Derby after qualifying through a series of preparatory races known as the Road to the Kentucky Derby. These stakes races are held at racetracks across the country and award Derby qualifying points to the top four finishers. The winning horse becomes the only horse eligible to complete that year's Triple Crown, by running in and winning the two other legs of the series. The Kentucky Derby is open only to 3-year-olds that are nominated to the Triple Crown series, and have earned enough qualifying points. Horses earn qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby through a series of prep races run September — April at multiple tracks across the country. Points available for the races range from , depending on the quality of the race and where the horse finishes. Currently a maximum of 20 horses can run in the Kentucky Derby. We may not have known it at the time, but the eventual Kentucky Derby winner three of the last four years came through one of these points preps that will be run again this weekend. Authentic won the Grade 2 San Felipe in at Santa Anita on his way through the outbreak of a human pandemic and a six-month wait before he took the Derby at an empty Churchill Downs. If not for that bob of the head against Erase, he would not have finished fourth, would not have gotten that all-important point, would not have been an also-eligible entrant in Louisville and would not have drawn in the day before he was the winner of the Derby.
