Deliverance banjo player

Billy Redden born is an American actor, best known for his role as a backwoods mountain boy in the film Deliverance.

I'm what you might call a "closeted" banjo player, so this may well be my coming-out paper. My parents were hippie folkies, and I grew up in the Appalachian region marinating in so much old-time string band music that around age twenty I literally picked up a banjo and just knew how to play it. But then I sold that car and went off to graduate school in Boston and, well, I just couldn't play the banjo there. It's not even that no one played, some did, but they always seemed to do so with a strange enthusiasm, an academic interest that made me nervous. When I moved to western New York for work, an African American historian friend who had grown up in New York City told me he actually could not stand to hear banjo music, because it always made him think of lynchings. That too gave me pause.

Play trailer Outrage: Born in Terror Billy Redden was a typical local teen living in Georgia, handpicked by director John Boorman for the role of an odd banjo player in the Oscar-nominated classic Deliverance To Boorman, Redden had the exact look of a country boy, the mannerisms, and something different from the usual qualities needed for a part that could be suitable only for someone who wasn't trained as an actor: a nonspeaking part in one sequence in which he makes a banjo duel against Ronny Cox. The sequence turned out to be one of the highest points of the thriller--and one of the most memorable moments of cinema. Some facts about the scene are that Redden did not know how to play the banjo, so another teenager was his hand double in the song "Dueling Banjos" while in the soundtrack, Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell were the musicians performing the song. And the sequence asked for Billy's character to show a complete state of contempt for Cox's character his on-screen rival , but he couldn't act in such way with the actor because he was very fond of him. On the other hand, he had a complete dislike for Ned Beatty , so the trick the director used for getting the exact reaction in the shot was to put Beatty next to Cox to make Billy react with disgust and dead-on facial expressions toward Beatty. The rest was all accomplished in the editing room.

And this July marks the 50th anniversary of the nightmarish backwoods thriller Deliverance, in which a group of city-slicker friends go on a weekend camping break in America's Deep South only to find the local hillbillies are anything but welcoming. Starring Burt Reynolds , Jon Voight, Ned Beatty and Ronnie Cox as the four pals, the film was a huge critical success but drew criticism for what some called its stereotypical depiction of the native Appalachian community as dangerous inbreds. An explicit scene of male rape, with its now-notorious "squeal like a pig" line, also shocked many who went to see it.

The song has been both a blessing and a curse to banjo players, associating the instrument with ignorant hillbillies while raising its profile in the music world. After a couple of years of lessons, I guess I got jealous of his hobby and wanted to learn an instrument for myself. But the banjo was something related enough to the mandolin that I thought my brother and I could play music with each other, so I kind of just agreed. I highly recommend that experience for somebody who wants something incredibly unique.
