King Dedede King DeDeDe in some older games; sometimes shortened to Dedede is a portly, blue, penguin-like creature who wields a hammer and proclaims himself king of Dream Land. He is a recurring character who serves as Kirby 's "arch frenemy" [1] and is usually fought as a boss. Though he often engages in trouble-making, mostly involving stealing other people's food, he has performed noble deeds as well, such as trying to seal away Nightmare , helping Kirby battle Queen Sectonia , and accompanying Kirby in several of his adventures. Because of this, he is considered a protagonist, despite his greediness and egotism. King Dedede lives in a castle atop a mountain with a retinue of Waddle Dees acting as his servants. He is often portrayed as a comic foil to Kirby, especially in spin-off titles, which makes him comparable to Bowser from the Mario franchise , though King Dedede is not nearly as villainous.

King Dedede is one of the main deuteragonists of the Kirby franchise, initially introduced as the first antagonist before quickly growing out of that role. He's the self-made king of Dream Land and a good friend of Kirby 's, although he prefers to be seen as his "destined rival. While he may "rule over" Dream Land, he doesn't exactly care to use his power for anything other than being pampered. He lives in his own castle named Castle Dedede atop Mt. Dedede with his massive following of Waddle Dees who serve him purely out of respect and admiration, and although he may not always show it, Dedede is appreciative and grateful of them, even being willing to risk his own life for their safety. Despite his lazy and carefree personality, Dedede is also an incredibly powerful and determined fighter who is considered one of the strongest-life forms on Planet Popstar and is always striving to become stronger, motivated by his rivalry with Kirby. For this reason, he will always be eager to participate in a friendly competition or a challenge usually because it was issued by him to begin with. However, his hubris lead him to believe that he could get away with stealing all the food in Dream Land and its Sparkling Stars. Thankfully, he was quickly thwarted by a pink ball of stars who recently flew in on the spring breeze, Kirby! That first defeat served as a humbling lesson for Dedede, and in the secret ending of the game's Extra Mode, Kirby is the one who tries to comfort him after his loss, despite the fact that it was Kirby who was responsible for Dedede's defeat. In the second game in the series, Kirby's Adventure , Dedede initially appears to be villain of the game once again, as he has stolen and shattered the sacred Star Rod from the Fountain of Dreams.
His likeness appears as a Dress-Up Mask.
This version of King Dedede comes equipped with a power-amplifying mask with a design similar to Dark Mind 's [1] and a mechanical hammer, variously referred to as the "New Dedede Hammer" [2] or the "Masked Dedede Hammer 2. His battle is similar to King Dedede's in Spring Breeze , except that he has more health and new attacks. In addition, there is an electric field above the battle arena that can shock Kirby if he floats too high or destroy any Ability Star on contact. Notably, despite being a more powerful version of King Dedede, Masked Dedede still flinches when hit by Kirby, which means many of his attacks can be interrupted. In Revenge of the King, Dedede offers Kirby a hammer before the battle, similar to Meta Knight 's offering of a sword in most of his fights. In The True Arena, no weapon is offered beforehand. When Masked Dedede is defeated in battle and is sent flying in Revenge of the King, his voice is considerably lower than when he is launched in Spring Breeze.
Due to his many roles as Kirby's main adversary, many consider Dedede to be the series antagonist. Despite this, he has helped more than harmed since Kirby's Return to Dream Land , and Nintendo has even described Dedede as Kirby's "arch-frenemy. He is the greedy self-proclaimed king of Dream Land , which is located on the quaint Planet Popstar. Due to an ambiguous description of the geography of Popstar, it is never made entirely clear how much of the planet King Dedede assumes leadership of, though he seems to have castles and fortresses all across the planet. Even so, he seems to perform no administrative functions, and for the most part, the planet seems to ignore any edicts that are issued by him. King Dedede's trademark weapon is a large star-studded hammer which he can swing around with the greatest of ease. He is also able to inhale objects and spit them out in a manner similar to Kirby.
