After the German conquest of France in the second world war, the Free French army drummed up recruits from its African colonies to bolster its comeback. North African troops had fought for France as far back as the Crimean war, and west Africans from the first world war. The film's characters are fictional, but plausible. Whereas its English-language title, Days of Glory, though also taken from the Marseillaise, sounds like a cross between a Tom Cruise movie and a Bon Jovi song. Thus not so clever. After serving as cannon fodder during the Italian campaign, the surviving troops sail for Provence.

However, this one is about men from the French colony of Algeria--folks you seldom ever hear about and I am sure many people from my country had no idea these folks fought for the Allies. In fact, now that I think about it, the only film where I can remember North African troops was "Two Women" and the Moroccan soldiers who raped the two ladies in the film! So, fortunately, these brave men get their due in "Days of Glory". These four volunteered to free their mother country in However, they soon saw that they weren't quite regular soldiers. Instead of receiving accolades or rank for their efforts, the men noticed that the white Christian French soldiers received these honors and the job of these Algerians was to shut up and die. Other examples of prejudice against these men were shown throughout the film as well as many incidents where they proved themselves in action. While I am thrilled that the men in this film finally get their due, I only give the film a 7. This means the film is good and worth seeing, but it had room for improvement. My problem with the film is that despite being a heart-moving topic, the film, strangely, was a bit bland.

The film, the Algerian nominee for the best foreign-language film Oscar and the winner of a special acting ensemble award at the Cannes Film Festival, follows a group of indigenes from Algeria to Morocco, through Italy to Provence, and finally to a village in Alsace, where they station themselves in anticipation of joining the invading Allied troops. These men consider themselves French citizens, but the French military treats them as second-class soldiers, denying them equipment, promotions, even tomatoes with their rations. Officers exploit their fervent patriotism, making promises they have no intention of keeping, to motivate the "wogs" to fight and die for the "fatherland" that treats them like bastard children. As is customary for this kind of genre picture, the main characters are not much more than types, but the actors are splendid at fleshing them out. Said popular French comedian and sitcom star Jamel Debbouze leaves his impoverished life to enlist in the Army, becoming a personal assistant or man-servant to Sgt. Martinez Bernard Blancan.
