Smouldering Lake is a Location in Dark Souls 3.

It is a subsection of the Catacombs of Carthus. The Smouldering Lake is a shallow lake that lies deep underground. Enormous trees that smoulder with embers grow up to the ceiling and their roots reach far into the chambers below the lake. It has been known to be the remains of the once molten Lost Izalith , or an area adjacent to the lost city. After many years, the lava had subsided significantly; the evidence to this being the presence of the demon corpses that litter the ground in the Demon Ruins , which in Dark Souls was the area one would have to go through to reach Lost Izalith. This was once the home to the daughters of the Witch of Izalith and the demons born from the Flame of Chaos.

As with Old Demon King, this entire area is optional - but it contains some good loot and a couple of key items which are very tempting for pyromancers. The way this fight works is that you have two bosses to defeat at first: The Demon from Below and the Demon in Pain. They both share the exact same moveset, but one starts off in a fire form and the other starts off in a poison form. It is crucial that you defeat the Demon in Pain the one not on fire when you start the fight first because if the Demon from Below is killed first, the entire fight will be significantly harder. Once both Demons are dead, the last Demon will transform into the Demon Prince , which will be very similar to the other Demons but have a slightly altered moveset as well as some new moves. If the Demon from Below is killed first, the Demon Prince will have many fireball attacks including a giant meteor attack that will most likely hit you and kill you. It is incredibly difficult to dodge, almost impossible even at the time of writing, and is the reason you shouldn't kill Demon from Below first. If the Demon in Pain is killed first, then the Demon Prince will be almost exactly like the Demons from before except he will have a giant laser attack that is incredibly easy to ignore if you just get behind him and it will also give you a good chance to attack him during this moment. Soon afterwards, you'll be able to wave that banner and you'll be transported to the Ringed City! Continuing from the Dreg Heap , you'll find a Bonfire along with Lapp if you met up with him at the beginning of the Earthen Peak Ruins. If you want to progress his quest, you'll need to pick up a Titanite Slab that will be found later in the level.
