The first time I went to a World Rally Championship event in Spain, I saw some things I expected: turbocharged AWD hatchbacks blitzing back roads at mph, banged-up cars limping into the pits at the end of stages, rabid fans watching the race from wherever they could find a spot, including up in trees. What I didn't expect—when driving from one stage to another—was to glance to the side and see one of the race cars idling alongside in traffic, waiting its turn for a roundabout. Indeed, all the WRC cars were required to drive between stages on public roads, and they were all street-legal. Thus leading to the surreal sight of two guys wearing race suits and helmets sitting there in rush hour in their Skoda race car. I hadn't noticed when they were going past sideways, but that thing had a license plate. It's a cross-country race bike that's been modified, barely, for street legality. The tires are slightly more pavement-friendly though still plenty knobby , there are turn signals and a speedometer, and the exhaust system includes a catalytic converter.

It's based on the company's flagship off-road-only motocross bike the Honda CRFR , so the L has off-road pedigree running deep through its veins, but that is not where its true calling lies. For touring duties, the Honda CRF Rally with its enhanced comfort and taller screen is generally the favoured option. It's a family of off-road-ready bikes built around a cc single-cylinder engine. The extra 18mm wheel base means it feels planted and stable whether blasting along fast tracks or over bumps, but little has been lost in terms of agility. Despite the lack of outright bhp, the strong torque figure makes it an engaging and entertaining ride. When seeing the spec sheet of the L many thought that there had been a mistake on the bhp figure. Honda claim 24bhp, which is practically the same as the L and around 20bhp less than you would expect from a modern cc single. But there is no mistake, to increase service intervals and meet strict Euro4 regulations 24bhp is all you have. There was a time when enduro bikes and trail bikes were the same thing. But over the years, the enduro bike has become more specialised to cope with the demands of competition, leaving the humble trail bike in its dust. Where is all the this special talk taking place about "top speed"? I have not seen it except for once in a great while here on TT when someone asks the question. This seems to happen about 1 in 10, posts so I wouldn't say that there is "obviously" a lot of talk about it. In fact, it seems that there obviously ISN'T much talk about it at all. I'm with you. Top speed is not talked about, and really has little to do with the design of these bikes. If you wan't "proven" facts, you should be able to calculate the top speed based on the gearing and the circumference of the rear wheel. It would take a bit more information, but look it up. It should be fairly easy.

If you're all about that trail-life, but aren't necessarily feeling the trailer-life aspect of it, then Honda's new CRF L was built with you in mind.
