The Mercury Cougar is a series of automobiles that was sold by Mercury from to The model line is a diverse series of vehicles; though the Cougar nameplate is most commonly associated with two-door coupes, at various stages in its production, the model also was offered as a convertible and a hatchback. During its production as the mid-size Mercury line, the Cougar was also offered as a four-door sedan and five-door station wagon. In production for 34 years across eight generations skipping the model year , the Cougar is second only to the Grand Marquis 36 years in the Mercury line for production longevity. During the s and s, the marketing of the Mercury division was closely associated with the Cougar, with promotional materials advertising Mercury dealers as "The Sign of the Cat" with big cats atop Lincoln-Mercury dealer signs.

Along with returning the standard Cougar name for the first time sincethe change added three more body styles. Adapting much of the equipment of the previous LS, cougar xr7 1975, the XR7 adapted chrome exterior trim and a standard digital instrument cluster, with four-wheel disc brakes becoming an option.

This sighting of a well preserved example, which I believe is the same car that I saw regularly in the same parking lot over 30 years ago, prompted this look back at a largely forgotten Mercury. Thus in the sedans, coupes, and station wagons formerly badged as Montegos became the Cougar sedan, Cougar coupe, and Cougar Villager. A half vinyl roof with simulated louvers at the front edge of the rear opera windows was an XR7-only feature that only the most fanatical car spotters would have noticed. Quite noticeable but also quite questionable was the trapezoidal simulated spare tire hump on the trunk lid, added to rear styling that otherwise was reminiscent of the contemporary Mercury Marquis. The interior of the Cougar XR7 imitated the Thunderbird closely, with the same instrument panels and corporate Ford steering wheel. The same sport instrument package that included a large speedometer and tachometer and five small dials for fuel and engine monitoring gauges was an option.

The Cougar, in fact, was so strongly associated with Mercury that the ad theme ultimately was used for all Mercury cars. When the Cougar was introduced in two versions, base and XR7 , it was a mem ber of the pony car set, based upon the unibody Mustang. And with changing market conditions, such as higher insurance premiums for bigengined cars and new federal regulations regarding emissions, the Cougar further evolved to fit, with even more emphasis being placed on luxury and styling.
