Making its F1 debut in Maythe Miami International Autodrome is a temporary circuit, but circuit miami designed to have a permanent feel. Ralph Sanchez is the father of racing at Miami; in he set out to put the city on the motorsport map, gambling that the area's large hispanic community, with its traditional following of road racing, would translate into a big crowd. He convinced IMSA to bring its fast sports prototypes, which was something of a coup as it had never previously held a street race. Miami would go on to form a template which was followed by the series at many different cities across the next decade. The first course was centred on Biscayne Boulevard, with portions of Bayfront Park, the harbour side and a specially-created section — on what would later become Bicentennial Park — being used.

F1 is set for a stunning weekend in the Miami heat when the drivers hit the Miami International Autodrome for the first time. The sport is aiming to capitalise on rapid growth in United States-based spectatorship in recent years by adding a second American race alongside the existing event at the Circuit of the Americas, which boasted record-breaking crowds last year. There has been plenty of scepticism over the addition of what is essentially another street track. But this is a street track only by name. The facility is purpose-built and is a hybrid circuit, meaning some parts will stay and others will be able to be removed once the event has concluded.
