Competitive Commander is a shockingly complicated format. While it is technically based in a casual format that is relatively accessible, four players all using card singleton decks with a vested interest in winning can get intense quickly. One of the ways to alleviate some of the issues you may have in adapting to this environment is choosing the correct deck. You can choose one that plays to your cedh decks, one that will teach you something about Magic or the cEDH metagame, or cedh decks can just try to keep your head above water.

EDH is increasing in popularity and a lot of people want to play with new commanders. In terms of deck evaluation, we will mostly be concerned with optimizing the commander, rather than comparing them to existing entries.

Welcome to my Mox Masters January Top 4 breakdown! Over five rounds of Swiss, those entrants reduce into a Top 16 for semi-finals and a Top 4 for the finals. I've brought you the decks of the latest finalists while highlighting another deck I liked. But first, let's take a look at the overarching meta for the first Mox Masters of While cEDH has been slowly developing a meta, tournaments are often still full of wild-west style brews. These decks all have some big similarities: they're mostly partner pairs, with the outliers being commanders that present a very focused plan. Winona, Joiner of Forces cheats powerful humans into play. Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy makes tons of mana to play huge bombs through his ability. Tivit, Seller of Secrets offers three powerful colors and is part of a two-card combo with Time Sieve that usually wins the game. It's no secret to me why so many players did choose to bring these decks. They all boast consistent and powerful game plans at the base, with the potential to do explosive things to win them the game.

Created to be a casual format, it quickly spawned a more competitive meta for players who compete to win. With that in mind, these are the best competitive Commander decks in Magic: The Gathering. The main differences are the power level of certain cards and the way in which a cEDH deck plans to win. All cEDH decks use cards that are incredibly powerful and seem borderline broken. Most cards in this category are generally banned in most other formats, are notoriously rare, and fetching high prices. The same holds true for the use of original dual lands from the earliest sets. This combo allows the player to either gain infinite mana, draw their entire deck, make everyone else lose immediately, or outright win on the spot. To accomplish this, decks will include fast mana to help fix their mana base and ramp spells. And in order to get the combo consistently and quickly, cEDH decks will also run tutor cards that let players search their decks for specific cards. Again, this is an acceptable part of playing MtG, but the tutor cards used in cEDH are the best of the best.

Competitive Commander can seem challenging to get a foot in the door. Honestly, I get it. There are plenty of cards that don't see play anywhere else, and getting to know your combos while knowing when to cast what spell can be maddening!

Alternatively, you can go the value route with Skullclamp and Callous Bloodmage. Whenever equipped creature dies, draw two cards. The most obvious weakness is not playing blue and not being super interactive on the first 2 turns. Tarnished Citadel deals 3 damage to you. I would question why this deck only included Mana Crypt as its only artifact in the list. At this point, you'll have built up a hefty storm count. Animar's Creature Feature Harvest Animar. The overall goal would be to control the state of the game, interacting with our opponent's win conditions, and waiting until we have acquired enough card advantage to safely execute our game plan.

Vadrik, Astral Archmage makes your spells cheaper as its power increases, which can easily be abused. Spells you control can't be countered this turn. It's the deck I would recommend if you're coming specifically from playing Modern or Legacy as your main Magic background. If you want to learn more about Blue Farm, read this. When it is unable to win quickly, it can utilize the powerful card advantage engine Kraum provides while keeping Ad Nauseam relevant and lethal even in the later stages of the game through Ikra Shidiqi's lifegain. The Markov Brood Symphony of the Knight. Orvar, the All-Form is a mono blue control deck that utilizes Orvar's token making to hold up interaction while allowing for instant speed ramping and board development using Twitch-style spells to generate value while maintaining card advantage, finishing the game with oddball Orvar-based combos. Lavinia, Azorius Renegade. Repeat this process until you put a card into your hand or you exile two cards with the same name, whichever comes first. Of course, I also have to call out the inclusion of Slicer, Hired Muscle, a card that cEDH players have recently discovered to be capable of dealing plenty of damage. The core plan is dead simple.
