Lark Rise to Candleford is a British television costume drama series, adapted by the BBC from Flora Thompson 's trilogy of semi-autobiographical novels about the English countryside. Its cast includes actors from other late and early BBC costume dramas such as Sense and Sensibility and Cranford. The story set in Oxfordshire. It is about Laura Timmins, a teenage girl from the village of Lark Rise who is sent by her parents to work as an assistant at the post office in the nearby town of Candleford. The post office is run by Miss Dorcas Lane, who is a cousin of Laura's mother. Laura's father, the stonemason Robert Timmins, at first misses her but later becomes proud of her for doing well in her new job.

The story is seen through the eyes of a young girl, Laura Timmins Olivia Hallinan , as she leaves Lark Rise to start a new life under the wing of her mother's cousin, the independent and effervescent Dorcas Lane Julia Sawalha , who is postmistress at the local post office in Candleford. Through these two characters, viewers experience the force of friendship as Laura and Dorcas see each other through the best and worst of times. The outdoor filming at these locations for the first series took 25 days, spread over a 5-month period. But we feel the time is right to make room for new dramas which we hope will be taken to the nation's hearts in the same way. Young country girl Laura Timmins leaves her friends and family to start her first job in Candleford. Postmistress Dorcas Lane gives Laura a warm welcome but other residents of Candleford aren't so generous. Mrs Macey finds out that her husband has escaped from prison, and Freddy has been meeting a stranger. When local widower Old Amos announces his engagement to his maid Patty, the town become suspicious that she may just be after his money. Meanwhile, Robert refuses to let his children sing a song in praise of the Tories at the local church concert, which results in them being banned from the concert altogether. Robert's stubbornness incurs the wrath of his children, family and even the village. A strange old man arrives in Candleford looking for his estranged daughters - who turn out to be Ruby and Pearl Pratt.
