After a year sabbatical in Singapore, Candice Renoir is back in the south of France and back to work as a police commandant. But as she deals with divorce proceedings, four children, and skeptical colleagues, her first murder case isn't an easy task. On the seashore a seemingly unremarkable woman is found dead, and only Candice is able to guess the victim's double life. Candice's children are having trouble adjusting to their new life, and Candice's team are having trouble adjusting to their new boss. But there are still crimes to be solved, and Candice and her friend Pascale, the forensic pathologist, are called to the scene when a man is found dead lying next to his barbecue. When year-old Arthur is thrown into the harbor, Candice learns he was binge drinking, an activity she's never heard of. The young man survives, but the case strikes close to home for Candice, as she's having problems with her own teenager, Emma. In the end, it's these very difficulties as a mother that help her crack Arthur's case. Soon enough she's distracted from her dilemma by a new case, when a badly damaged body is found in a dump. Candice recognizes the victim as an occasional prostitute, and she deploys her unique assets to gain access to a "special" party. One night Candice is called to an emergency at a local hotel after a wheelchair-bound man is thrown down a flight of stairs. It turns out the man had leukemia and had been tended to by the hotel staff, but lately his condition had worsened. Was it attempted murder, or suicide? Candice feels exhausted from the demands of work and motherhood when someone appears out of the blue to make it all worse. The kids are happy to have their father, Laurent, back home, but Candice is far from thrilled.

On the home front, Candice deals with the return of her soon to be ex-husband.
