The COC enjoys a loyal audience, including a dedicated base of subscribers, and has an international reputation for artistic excellence and creative innovation. Ground-breaking for the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts took place on April 11, and inaugural celebrations took place in June The opera house, situated at the southeast corner of Queen Street and University Avenue, is a seat theatre specifically designed for opera and ballet with the finest possible level of acoustics. The contemporary expression of a traditional five-tiered, European horseshoe-shaped auditorium provides unparalleled intimacy between the audience and the stage. This first Canadian purpose-built opera house is designed by the award-winning Toronto-based firm Diamond Schmitt Architects. The COC purchased these buildings in and embarked on an extensive program of renovation and reconfiguration. A private capital fundraising campaign was successful in raising much of the renovation cost, with a substantial lead gift from Joey and Toby Tanenbaum.

Although the singers and most of the technical and musical staff were from the Opera School, this festival marked the true beginning of the COC. In November the Opera Festival Association was incorporated to sponsor the annual presentations of the company and, by assuming all administrative and financial responsibility for the productions, to absolve the Royal Conservatory of Music of direct costs while providing an opportunity for the school's students and staff to exercise their talents. Although the increased use of professional casts and the limiting of the season to the fall precluded Opera School participation on more than a supportive basis, the COC continued to use the school's facilities and to co-operate until , through mutual employment agreements with the school, in ensuring the year-round availability to both organizations of competent stage directors.
