The primary objective of our programs is to provide comprehensive training in internal medicine to prepare physicians for independent practice or for additional specialty training. We strive to achieve excellence in patient care for the full range of medical conditions and to instill an academic mindset towards clinical practice and appreciation of the concepts of medical research. We believe that optimal training of physicians occurs in an atmosphere where patients and professional colleagues are treated with respect and sensitivity to their needs. Internal Medicine residents participate in the care of a large and diverse patient population derived from the private practices of the faculty, referrals from outlying areas, from the Emergency Department, and from the housestaff clinic. Rotations on subspecialty medicine services are required in addition to rotations on general internal medicine services. Elective months in areas of particular interest are provided. Experience in critical care is gained on all inpatient services as residents follow their own patients in the intensive care units, and this experience is supplemented by a rotation in critical care.
