When connected to other players online for co-op or PvPplayers who are guests in a host's world will appear as a phantom. Phantoms are designated a recognizable color to establish their friendliness or hostility to a host.

In addition to human-controlled invaders, there are a number of NPC Black Phantoms that are scripted to invade the player upon reaching certain areas of the game. Their invasion is always preceded by a warning, and share the black and red glow on the invader, as with human-controlled invaders of the Darkwraith Covenant. To enable the invasion of a Black Phantom NPC , the player must reverse their hollowing be in human form and not have killed the area's Boss. Some BP NPCs however, require additional prerequisites, such is the case for Paladin Leeroy ; the player needs to have obtained the Lordvessel to access the area he invades. Tomb of Giants and Demon Ruins , require the Lordvessel to unblock the golden fog gates. Their red coloring is caused by the invader either being in the Darkwraith covenant , using a Cracked Red Eye Orb , or being summoned to another player's world through placing a summon sign with a Red Sign Soapstone. The aim of a Red Phantom is to kill the host whose world they have invaded. Upon the host's death, they are rewarded with liquid humanity.

Here's my scenario: I was in the Depths, essentially poking around when I receive a message that such and such a BP invaded the name was silly - something like 'Killer Kurt'.
