You can tell a lot about a show from a mediocre episode. While it teased some information we need to better understand the superhero mythology of this world, it was too uneven in its tonally disparate plots to be truly great, black lightning season 1 episode 5. Still, if this is going to be what a medicore episode of Black Lightning looks like, then this show is something special. Jefferson Pierce was firmly in his Black Lightning persona this episode, pushing himself past his limits to find the people behind Green Light.
That thought crossed my mind several times while watching Black Lightning Season 1 Episode 5 , which found the titular hero struggling with the drawbacks of being a superhero. We already know that this isn't Jefferson's first rodeo, but he needs to stop and take a long hard look at himself and establish some ground rules to stay healthy. We don't know all the details about what really happens to the body with all that electricity whizzing around, but we do know that Jefferson has found himself immobile in the past. If you watch Black Lightning online , you will know that's why Lynn has worried about him going out on the streets of Freeland trying to keep everyone safe. Watching Jefferson struggle physically is tough because it's evident he's trying to fight through the pain.

In September , after going through several incarnations and various stages of development for over a year, Mara Brock Akil , her husband Salim Akil, and perennial Warner Bros. Television producer Greg Berlanti began pitching Black Lightning to television networks. The Akils wrote the script while serving as executive producers alongside Berlanti and his frequent collaborator Sarah Schechter. As the home to several of Berlanti's other television ventures, The CW emerged as the network that was likely to realize the series. In writing the first season, Salim Akil stated that he was most inspired by the original run of Black Lightning comic books and that Black Lightning being a black father who defies the "deadbeat stereotype" was part of the reason for the Akil's wanting to tell his story. He said that Jefferson takes after King, where he "would prefer to educate and to love and to be peaceful, but [he understands] that there's a different side. His hatred for himself and for others comes from a real place, so we want to know why he's like that. Salim Akil noted that topics such as the Black Lives Matter movement and other issues concerning race relations and police brutality would be addressed, but stressed that, "This is an American story, this is not a black story. We're going to be culturally specific, but universal in our themes so everyone can see themselves in these stories.

This episode of Black Lightning was very busy and all over the place. Things were happening with four different characters and the action jumped back and forth like crazy. I'm going to focus by person rather than chronological and we'll start off with Jefferson Cress Williams. Black Lightning is out testing a theory Gambi James Remar came up with that BL could use his powers to fly and he tries it by leaping of a building. Why not just try to rise up off the ground? Not as flashy. While out testing flight, he comes across another guy freaking out on Green Light going up against the cops. He stops it without anyone dying, telling the cops to try a taser first next time. Gambi has tracked down an invoice and they find a place where Green Light had be stored.

One of Jefferson's students, Bernard, almost overdoses on a new strength-enhancing street drug, Green Light. Not enough TV shows have montage sequences.
