B etta fish have a reputation for being feisty and territorial, and they're generally considered to be poor tank mates—but that's not always the case. Yes, bettas can be aggressive, especially males against other males, which is why they should generally not be kept together in the same tank. Snails are some of the best tank mates for bettas. Mystery snails in particular are a great option as they clean up algae, consume uneaten food, are extremely docile and have a hard shell to retreat into in the event your betta is particularly curious. Nerite snails are another great choice and have intricate shell patterns that add an interesting visual element to your tank.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of shrimp and snails, and would prefer fish. I was thinking I could put a female Platy with my male Betta. I'm not sure if it would work out in a 5 gallon tank, though. Single male guppies don't live that long - if you are lucky 2 years but then again they don't live much longer in groups either. Just not enough room. A couple of endlers might work - they have smaller tails so the betta might leave em alone. Also you could probably do 4 or 5 ember tetra but a 5 gallon is pretty small.
The ghost shrimp or glass shrimp is appropriately named for its see-through appearance and is an invertebre. The colorful tail on the guppy would probably trigger the betta, might work with a female.
