Few if any hotels in Sorrento offer more spectacular views of the Gulf of Naples than the Belair, which is built right into the side of a cliff about a half-mile from the Cathedral of Sorrento and was recently recognized as a 5-star hotel. Hotel Belair is not especially upscale, but it does have the elegant feel of an Italian property of yesteryear. Rooms have all been renovated, but nearly all have balconies with gulf views. Surrounded by landscaped gardens, the outdoor infinity pool and sun terrace offer up more gulf views. The restaurant serves fairly typical Mediterranean and Sorrentine cuisine and offers outdoor dining. To start the evening with an aperitivo with a view there is the wonderful Roof Bar Oblivion with cocktails and finger food selections. The offer of services is enriched by a small gym with a view of Vesuvius and a private promenade to access the beaches of the old fishing village of Marina Grande. Guests also have access to the spa facilities hot tub, steam bath, massage services, and beauty treatments at a nearby sister hotel. This 5-star hotel is housed in a three-floor tiered Mediterranean-style building of light yellow and white, the Belair has a cliffside location that showcases views of the Gulf of Naples from its pool deck, restaurant terrace, and many of its rooms. The outdoor pool gets a lot of direct sunlight, so it produces a sparkling blue color for a dramatic effect. The surrounding gardens provide shelter, shade, and pleasant seating. One area on the cliffside has a fresco painted on the rock. Most of the rooms are rather simple in their decor, but the lobby and reception have an Old World feel, with chandeliers, a white piano, pale blue sofas, artwork, and antique cabinets. Some may find it evocative of La Dolce Vita -era Italy, while others may find the aesthetic a bit dated.

The building is a peachier, more subdued shade of pink than its sister hotel, with the Spanish Colonial—style architecture and acres of gardens making you feel worlds away from the rest of Los Angeles. I arrived at the hotel at 9am, exhausted and severely jetlagged from my hour flight from Sydney where I was wedged in the middle of two people travelling together, who insisted on spending the flight passing things over me. It was December, pouring with rain, and I had not packed for cold weather AT ALL — I had arrived at my last stop on a round-the-world trip that had seen me spend the previous three weeks in the balmy warmth of Singapore and Australia , so the warmest item of clothing I had with me was a pair of jeans and a light scarf! The mature gardens were stunning, a small slice of paradise with large shrubs and towering oak trees, and pretty flowers lining the path as you walk towards the hotel itself. Looking dishevelled and tired, the check-in staff welcomed me into the cosy lobby.

One of the most stunning properties in Los Angeles, if not the world, the Hotel Bel-Air screams luxury in the most private and understated way. The hotel sits on 12 lush acres in the residential area of Bel-Air and prides itself on being a home away from home for the rich, famous and very discrete. The hotel has a number of standard rooms with garden views, private patios and more. But almost all the rooms are unique with varying original art, design and amenities.

The quieter location is away from the tourist crowds, and a free shuttle…. Very Poor. Very Good. One area on the cliffside has a fresco painted on the rock. I took this opportunity to make the most of the warmth of the fireplace, and sat next to it, curling up on a comfortable oversized chair with my book, a giant Christmas tree by the nearby window.

The property really needs some investment but we really enjoyed our stay.
