Assassin's Creed Origins is a action role-playing video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It is the tenth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series, following 's Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Principally set in Egypt , near the end of the Ptolemaic period from 49 to 43 BC, the story follows a Medjay named Bayek of Siwa and his wife Aya as they seek revenge for the murder of their son. It also explores the origins of the Assassin Brotherhood —referred here to as the Hidden Ones—and of their millennia-long conflict with the Order of the Ancients—forerunners to the Templar Order. The framing story, set in the 21st century, follows a new character, Layla Hassan, who relives Bayek and Aya's memories using a modified Animus device. Ubisoft Montreal led its four-year development with help from a team of nearly people from other Ubisoft studios around the world. The team consulted Egyptologists and historians extensively to ensure the setting was authentically represented in the game.
T he Steam Next Fest is now underway and that means we've got an awful lot of game demos to plow through in a very short amount of time. One early standout I've run is a metroidvania called Tales of Kenzara: Zau , a story about a shaman in the land of Kenzara attempting to reclaim his father's spirit. Tales of Kenzara: Zau was first revealed at the Game Awards: it's the debut project from a new studio headed up by Assassin's Creed Origins voice actor Abubakar Salim. Gameplay in Tales of Kenzara: Zau is familiar: Running, jumping, and sliding across a multilevel 2. It's fast, smooth, and accessible even for non-metroidheads: Zau wields an arsenal of upgradeable ranged and melee combat powers but a "relaxed" gameplay mode keeps fights from becoming too overwhelming, and while it recommends a gamepad I found the mouse and keyboard controls perfectly fine, aside from some aiming wonkiness with ranged attacks. What makes it stand out, though, is the gorgeous landscapes and lore of the fictional nation of Kenzara, as well as the narrative: A tale of a son who makes a deal with the god of death to bring back his Baba—his father—from the land of darkness. The portrayal of the god of death is particularly interesting. Rather than a terrifying Grim Reaper type, he's a firm-but-fair father figure himself who, after gently trying to discourage Zau from undertaking the dangerous quest, encourages and admonishes him as necessary along the way. Tales of Kenzara: Zau is "inspired by Bantu tales" as well as Salim's own "journey of grief" after the death of his father.

There are multiple cities, too, each with their own unique culture featuring different gods, politics, race relations, and prejudices to uncover. The density of it is made more impressive by being able to explore it in its entirety without any loading screens, with the exception of some story cutscenes, and if you choose to fast travel. From collecting clues to solve mysteries, to chariot racing and gladiatorial arena fighting, to chasing down leads and assassinating high-level enemies hidden in fortresses, to Black Flag-style ship-to-ship combat, I was pleasantly surprised by how each of them felt like a self-contained short, well-paced story. I rarely felt like I was doing too much of any one thing. While there are quests that simply involve finding a hidden location or looting a building, Origins has largely done away with the cluttered mini-map full of useless chests. Instead, the vast majority of quests require multiple steps to complete and have multi-faceted, interesting characters with believable motives.

Due to the setting being further back in time than previous entries in the franchise, history books did not always suffice as reference. View Steam Achievements Despite empathizing with Khaliset's loss, Bayek kills her to put an end to the abductions. Some features that had been frequently requested by the fanbase were introduced into the game: players are able to toggle Bayek's hood on and off in the menu screen and multiple save files are making their return after having been absent in Assassin's Creed: Unity and Syndicate.
