Coming from a long lineage of painters, Australian artist Ashleigh Holmes has literally and metaphorically made her mark in the art world: being a finalist for both the Combat Prize and Mosman Art Prize. As a fourth-generation artist, can you tell us what it was like growing up surrounded by painters and the art world? What is your earliest painting-related memory? It was very subconsciously inspiring to witness my mother painting from home, to be encouraged to join in with her and paint from a young age.

She has been painting for as long as her hands could hold a brush. Holmes has developed her painting practice from a vocational pursuit into a full-fledged professional career. The Curators: Tell us about yourself and how you came to be an artist. Ashleigh Holmes: I am a fourth generation artist born on the Northern Beaches in Sydney Australia, which is also where my studio, 'Studio Four' is located. Our family has always been really creative and supportive of me and my siblings' creative side so when I was 3 years old my Mum handed me a paintbrush and I've never looked back. Creating has always played a big role in my life, I love photography, sculpting and drawing so it was a very natural progression to being a full-time artist. The Curators: Where do you draw inspiration from? Ashleigh Holmes: I draw inspiration primarily from natural landscapes and travel, I find the colours of nature are a huge part of my preferred colour palette, often drawn directly from a sunrise or cloudscape I had recently seen. I have also been really fortunate to travel to some beautiful places, Japan was so inspiring and Mallorca too! The Curators: Could you tell us about your process when you're creating.

Ashleigh Holmes, despite her young age, already has experienced an overwhelming interest for her work from collectors and galleries internationally. She has in a very short time proved her talent in her home country with several sold-out shows and being finalists at the Combat Prize and Mosman Art Prize. Ashleigh has an admirable drive and the fact that she has been able to build up a successful art career at such a young age shows that this is only the beginning. Taking a thought and turning into something you can view comes naturally! I act quite intuitively in my life when making decisions and I feel that is how the process of my work goes, too. As a fourth-generation artist, Ashleigh Holmes is no stranger to the world of art. Holmes grew up immersed in an artist environment and has continued to thrive while developing and refining her individual style of abstract, oil, and acrylic paintings. She paints commission and non-commission pieces, both of which have been purchased for private collections worldwide. With a non-commission, I usually dream up or conceptualize the idea in my mind and ponder on the direction for weeks or months before going into action with it! Once paint is to canvas the process and techniques, I use are similar. Both processes at the end stages is a matter of me intuitively knowing when the piece is at completion.

It was very subconsciously inspiring to witness my mother painting from home, to be encouraged to join in with her and paint from a young age. Our house was full of creativity, music and art. My relationship with my grandmother also a painter is very close, she and my mother would often talk about my art and give me positive words of affirmation about how they saw my pieces. The earliest memory I have is when I was in year 3, I painted my first acoustic guitar on canvas, the piece is about sixty centimetres by sixty and we still have it. There are photos of me painting from age 3, however the memories I can recall start later on.
