Unlike many of its competitors, which have almost unanimously gone down the proprietary or one-piece bar-stem setup route, the bike sticks to a traditional non-integrated cockpit. This makes customising the Sum Pro easier — good for fettlers with exacting requirements — while the short stack naturally positions the bike towards the aggressive end of racy bike fits. What is in a name? Bike names are normally abstract, words that sound cool. A Sum, by contrast, sounds rather utilitarian. Mathematicians may disagree, but I have never thought of a sum as cool. Maths does however have a wonderful logic and precision. Having been one of the first people to ride the new Argon 18 Sum Pro , I now understand the name. It is a very clever sum indeed. My specialty is ultra endurance road, having cycled around the world twice, both in record-breaking time, which takes a very specific type of road bike. But whereas most professional cyclists will only ride their team bikes, my role as a GCN presenter means that I get to ride a huge variety of bikes. So whilst I will declare my bias, I have a broader context than most to do a ride review. That said, I am a bike rider and not a journalist, so here goes. Canada's Argon 18 has just unveiled two new road bikes called the Sum and the Sum Pro that are said to combine light weight and aerodynamic efficiency. Merging these two attributes has been a huge theme in high-end launches over the past couple of years, with Argon 18 saying that the new bikes are designed to perform both on the flat and in the mountains. They're going for the 'one bike to rule them all' vibe that Specialized was keen to shout about with the launch of the Tarmac SL7. Argon 18's introductory spiel goes: "Meet the best of the best: aero to match the Nitrogen, pure road performance to match the Gallium Pro, with race-ready handling and premium ride quality. Sum Pro Quiver-killer? On all widths, the compact bar has a mm drop, 78mm reach, and 4 degrees of flare. Fast, but not in a way that makes handling difficult.
