The THX Series is the culmination of years of design, analysis, testing, and listening.

I was so delighted by the THX Monitors last year that I had been eager to see what their other speakers were capable of. I opted to review the Tower S THX , the subject of this article, because I wanted to see what they could do as a tower speaker, but not merely as an extension of the THX Monitors which I already had experience with. The S THX series scales back the regular THX speakers for a smaller size and lighter weight but keeps the same basic design cues. In theory, this should give us a similar sound qualitatively at the cost of dynamic range versus the regular series. This is probably a worthwhile trade-off for most people since few users of the series are likely to take full advantage of their dynamic range.

Its flagship product, the THX speaker line, has been developed with the idea of producing performance, precision, and build quality at a relative value. The speakers have a quality finish with matte or gloss black and matte or gloss white options, however, the gloss options will be phased out in the near future. Rather than a wild design, the quality of materials and the manner of construction are emphasized with these speakers, and it is immediately apparent as you begin unpacking them. They arrive in a solid package with all-around edge guards and are sandwiched between two layers of polyethylene, with another piece covering the center. After you remove all of the outer packaging, there's another level of protection against scuffing and moisture from the drawstring bag, which is a nice addition. They also come with cotton white gloves to help you handle the speaker without leaving fingerprints on the finish.

Two opened were also good if I was aiming for a bit more bass emphasis, arendal 1723. The Monitors boast THX Ultra certification which means, among other things, it can hit THX Reference levels in a 3, cubic feet room with a foot distance from the speakers.

The THX Series is the culmination of years of design, analysis, testing, and listening. There are no corners cut in material specification , whether you can see them or not. In the Premium segment of speakers, where others disguise steel with gold, we use rhodium-plated copper. Where others use plastics, we use machined aluminum. We did all of this because it delivers better audible results. Our HDF cabinets, thick crossover PCBs, and ancillary parts, feature engineering detail you will not find at anything like the price.

If you notice better performing products in future reviews that have lower numbers in certain areas, be aware that the value factor is most likely the culprit. The Monitors come with port plugs so the user can configure the speaker for a sealed response. Port tuning looks to be about 30Hz by our measurement, whereas Arendal shows port tuning to be about 40Hz. They can get loud without running into distortion, as one would expect from a THX Ultra certified speaker of its design. I wouldn't call this a review. There may be a difference in soundstage between the two since the smaller drivers of the S series would radiate sound at a slightly wider angle thereby incurring a bit more early acoustic reflections, and that can have its benefits, but that is not going to be a major difference. The motor is hidden behind the shielding, but the driver is fairly heavy and solid, so I would guess it has a pretty hefty magnet. The bass goes deep but has great speed and control, punching when it needs to, and it never falls out of line with the rest of the spectrum.

This is as good as it gets, even at much higher price levels.
