AM is the fifth studio album by English rock band Arctic Monkeys. The album was promoted by the singles " R U Mine? The band took a different approach to recording the album in comparison to their previous album, Suck It and See , with more emphasis on creating a "studio album" according to frontman Alex Turner. The band incorporated new instruments on the album, including the piano, organ, Hohner Guitaret , and vintage drum machine. Thematically, the album concerns frustration surrounding tainted romance , sex and loneliness. Commercially, the album has become one of Arctic Monkeys' most successful to date, topping charts in several countries, and reaching top ten positions in many more. Topping the UK Albums Chart , it sold over , copies in its first week and also went on to be one of the UK's best-selling vinyl albums of the decade, selling 73, units. The single "Do I Wanna Know? AM received critical acclaim, with critics praising its darker and groovier sound in comparison to the band's previous records. It featured in many year-end lists as one of the best albums of , [ citation needed ] including the BBC who named it the best of the year.

The Arctic Monkeys — AM. The Arctic Monkeys are an English indie-rock band consisting of four members. The cover art for the album is quite unique has a very simple abstract design. It consists of not a black but a very dark grey background with a smooth white wavy line across the horizontal centre of the album. This image has become quite iconic and is recognised to represent the Arctic Monkeys which makes it a good marketing tactic. There seems to be a trend in the music industry to simply black and white colours or have photographs completely in greyscale on album covers.

Chris McClure, once the frontman of the band Violent May, formed a friendship with the Arctic Monkeys during their early days. Sharing common interests and attending gigs together, their bond grew as they rode the same bus home. Joining Arctic Monkeys on their first tour, McClure served as their guitar technician, despite lacking expertise in tuning guitars. The band valued his presence as someone who was part of their close-knit group, rather than merely a technical professional. The band members were out on tour when McClure was chosen to be the face on the album cover. Given a sum of money and instructed to get drunk, he met the photographer hours later in Liverpool. Amidst the blurry night, McClure posed on a stool, occasionally interrupted by bouts of throwing up.

Drummer Matt Helders took the picture on the album cover, which depicts a white Toyota Camry in an otherwise empty parking garage on a Los Angeles rooftop. Its title refers to said cover and the abundance of vehicular references in the lyrics. It features a wide array of genres that include art rock , orchestral rock , lounge pop , baroque pop , and funk , as well as elements of jazz. It also draws influence from soul music , electronic music , glam rock , bossa nova , traditional pop and vintage film soundtracks. Its lyrical content explores nostalgia and show business , specifically the music and film industries.

Turner later revealed that the band had nearly titled the album The New Black , after a guitar amp they used in the recording process: "I got this old Rickenbacker thing that we recorded a lot through.
